Has a boss ever fired someone out of compassion?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) August 17th, 2020

For example:
To prevent the employee from languishing away in a job they hate?

Can you put a positive spin on being fired?

I guess one can include dating , and teaching.

Humor welcome.

In the history of the world? Probably. But since I’m not omniscient I cannot cite a specific example.

Bosses are just people. It seems safe to assume that their motivations for dismissing an employee could be just as complex as people’s motives for other things. Putting someone out of his misery is not such a bad thing.

You could get fired if your boss didn’t like the color of your favorite shirt or if you told a joke once that unwittingly mocked his grandmother, and you would never know. A pretext can always be found.

Often such outcomes are for the best, even if getting there can be uncomfortable.

I fired someone out of compassion for the rest of the staff. He was insufferable.

But no, people don’t fire people out of compassion, because that places the person being fired in economic jeopardy. No boss knows the circumstances of someone’s life well enough to make such a decision as being better for the person. Only an asshole would think that.

@zenvelo, are you saying that no one would ever do it because it would be irrational? I agree that it would be irrational, but people do irrational things, sometimes for misguided reasons. I don’t know how we can rule anything out when it comes to human behavior.

Some assholes are bosses.

I suppose that if one quit the job they would not get unemployment benefits but if fired they can get it quicker, so that is the compassionate part that probably was the underlying reason a rally passionate person would consider.

@Inspired_2write People that are fired don’t get unemployment in the US. One gets unemployment because of reductions in force.

@zenvelo
People get fired for different reasons, some there Probationary period is up and employers finds them not suited for the job etc

People do not have to stay in unsafe work conditions and quit or are fired for reporting of mentioning to management etc

Health issues happen and so either have to quit or deemed unsuitable to work at that time.\ in which case medical leave will cover unemployment.( up to 15 months only).

Of course I can only speak for Canadian Unemployment but not up on the updates now that Pandemic is occurring.
