Anyone else pay the IRS online and get a late notice that you didn’t pay?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) August 23rd, 2020 from iPhone

I paid online on June 15. I just received a notice they never received it.

I’m so annoyed. I printed out my confirmation and my bank statement to send to them.

I’m looking for the story I saw on this and I seem to remember it’s a scam. In your case, it may be legitimate, but let me see if I can find it.
Look up the number to the IRS and don’t call the one they have given you.

I googled IRS scams and there are so many, you will need to look it up yourself as you know what you received. Good luck.

Which part is the scam? You mean the website I paid on or the follow up letter. The letter looks very legit. I’ve seen IRS letters before for bosses I’ve worked for.

@JLeslie I had to make a payment in both June and July. Did you pay both?

The follow up letter. I’m not saying it is a scam, just that you be careful with the information you are giving them.

@chyna Yeah, I was going to cross out my bank account number, but I forgot, I already sent it. Thank you though, I agree that is good advice. The post office actually said the zip code was not what they have on file, which is weird.

@janbb I have no idea what you are talking about, I paid what I owed in full at once.

@JLeslie This year the April quarterly could be paid in July while the June quarterly was paid in June. Maybe you had already paid April’s and this was just June or maybe you paid both in June? I did them as two separate payments so I was wondering if that was the issue for you.

I called and the IRS said I sent the money using my SS# and my husband is the primary on our joint return so my SS# showed the payment, but it wasn’t applied to our 2019 tax return. They switched the money over to my husband’s ID while I was on the phone.

@janbb Not quarterly. I’ve never heard of a late notice regarding quarterly, the IRS has no idea how much is owed for a quarterly payment, that depends on how much the person earned (which is an amount not reported to the IRS until January).

Looks like you got the problem solved. But to explain my suggestion further, i have to pay estimated taxes quarterly based on my projected income for the year and since they delayed the April due date to July, the second quarter was due before the first. And I believe I have gotten a late notice when I delayed a payment. I’m glad that wasn’t the situation for you.
