Can an outdoor swimming pool get infested with worms?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24987points) August 25th, 2020

When I was a child my adult friend told me not to go into the swimming pool because It was infested with worms. Is that possible? Or was he making it up?

Yes, and some worms thrive in the pool. But most are not the type of worms to infest humans; the horsehair worm infests crickets and other bugs, but not people.

Crytosporidium, a parasite, is a bigger concern. Don’t swallow pool water.

Are we talking about a pool that is frequently used and kept clean and chlorinated? Because if that is the case, I would doubt the worm thing.

@anniereborn Yes it is a group condo owned swimming pool.

Since it’s been awhile since you were a child, maybe they didn’t use the chlorine as well as they should have at that time

Not a well maintained swimming pool.
