How long have soft-serve yogurt and frozen yogurt been commercially available?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) August 30th, 2020

I know that a company called ‘I Can’t Believe it’s Yogurt’ came out in 1977, followed by TCBY (originally ‘This Can’t Be Yogurt, later, The Country’s Best Yogurt) in 1981. And I remember two independent frozen soft-serve yogurt places in my town that were open briefly in the fall of 1977 through about a year later.

Does anyone remember soft-serve frozen yogurt before 1977, or have any knowledge of it?

In Connecticut 1983. I remember going to one after dinner, it was about 3 miles from where I was living.

1983 seems to be about the time it became popular.

I liked regular yogurt enough that I didn’t try any soft serve until it was around pretty commonly in the 1980s

Frozen yogurt was created by the HP Hood company in 1971. They also invented the term “frogurt.” My grandfather ran quality control for their dairies at the time and was one of the first people to try it. He told us that story every time we had frozen yogurt. The reason it took so long to become popular is that early versions really just tasted like yogurt that had been frozen. It took time for it to be made into a passable ice cream substitute.
