Do you donate to people involved in viral stories?

Asked by Demosthenes (15297points) September 3rd, 2020

Reading about Nancy Pelosi’s “Salon-gate” and the fact that the salon owner has now received thousands from Republicans got me thinking: how likely are you to donate to one of these people? The shamed salon-owner, the hero/murderer Kyle Rittenhouse…these viral personalities with Gofundme accounts receiving donations for political reasons…do you donate to these kinds of things?

The last thing I donated to was wildfire relief in California. I don’t think I’ve ever donated to a “viral” cause and I’ve certainly never donated to “spite the other side” (which seems all too plainly to be the motive in many of these cases). I’m just wondering who are the people giving money to these things.

Never have, likely never will. I don’t understand people who do, actually.

I have donated for natural disaster aid. I don’t recall even considering donating to an individual that I don’t know personally.

I don’t know IF this counts as viral, but a local family’s young child died & they didn’t have the money to bury him. The news report gave a Go Fund Me address so you could make a donation IF you felt like it was a worthy reason. All of a sudden I could remember back to when I didn’t have 2 pennies to rub together & I was thinking how horrible the situation they were in was. I knew from talking with friends that the story was true & I felt it was a worthy cause, so I went to Go Fund Me & made a donation because I felt that it was the right thing to do. Since then, Go Fund Me has driven me crazy asking me to donate to things that I’ve NEVER heard of & don’t feel compelled to take time doing any research.

As far as donating to someone because of my political leanings…hell NO!!! I’m NOT giving my money to any political campaign either. I don’t like politics & I despise politicians & I’ve not found any politician that I can trust to spend my money wisely; so, they do NOT deserve my money!!!

I do not. I don’t use PayPal or Facebook payment methods. I have donated checks to animal welfare causes. That’s about it.

As for funeral expenses, I know from working at social services that there are funds available from social services for cremating people and having a simple service. I always tell people that when they say they need money for a funeral.

The cynic in me says that I should be very dubious of a lot of these – they’re like scams or otherwise not above board.

So – ZERO chance of me donation on the basis of a viral video.

I don’t, and honestly, pretty much the only causes I donate to at this point are some local animal shelters.

No, I do however support talented furry porn artists on Patreon.

I usually don’t unless it’s something in my home town or I know of them personally. Otherwise sadly too many scammers out there. Even organizations, a lot of it is a very low percentage that actually goes to the cause.
