Should Ted Wheeler be removed from office?

Asked by crazyguy (3207points) September 9th, 2020

Wheeler is running for re-election in November. Based on the latest polling (see https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/9-news/471222-381301-survey-shows-tight-race-for-portland-mayor) and popularity rating (see https://www.foxnews.com/politics/portland-mayor-ted-wheeler-viewed-negatively-by-two-thirds-of-citys-voters-report), Wheeler will probably lose in November, and be replaced in January. That still gives him four months to continue wreaking havoc on the city. Should he be forced to give up his office now?

What are you asking, specifically? Are you asking if a PAC-funded small poll paid for by Wheeler’s opponent should…eliminate US democracy and force an elected official out of office?

Elaborate?

@hmmmmmm I guess I showed my ignorance of the recall petition. I am not certain there is enough time left for that before November. Believe me, I was not advocating or asking for an unconstitutional method.

How do you force him to give up his office? Like a coup? We don’t do that in the US, @crazyguy

@crazyguy Substitute the name Trump in place of Wheeler in your question, and change the word “city” to “country” and let us know if that is a good idea?

If you say yes, I will support your effort to oust Wheeler.

If he is in office, wouldn’t he have to be impeached, unless he leaves voluntarily? With only four months to go, is it worth the effort?

@jca2 is right.

They could vote to impeach but it’s usually seen as more trouble than it’s worth near the end of a term so most would let him stay unless the entire council puts it to a vote. And no council or govt really wants to usurp the will of the people, who originally elected him.

Now if he felt the pressure and resigned willingly now, the Mayor Pro-Tem/ Pres of Board could take over until the new Mayor was sworn in and took office.

He should be voted out in the next election.

It’s not going to work to try and get him out now. By the time they do (if they are successful) it would already be election time anyways

I was not intending to imply an unconstitutional method for removing a duly elected official. What I had in mind was a recall petition, but there is not sufficient time for that. So I am going to withdraw my question.

Agree 100%. My question is bad and an attempt will be made to withdraw it. I was thinking in terms of something like a recall petition, not an unconstitutional method.
