I like Tom Cotton of Arkansas for the Republicans but he seems awfully young for the SQ . Time will tell, though. What will be the names of Biden’s choices ?

Barack Obama, hands down.
@janbb Oooh. Yes! I forgot that he is a lawyer.
Well, Obama already said he is not interested in the part.
But it would be a fantastic, massive middle finger to Drumpf.
Nanci Pelosi’s hair stylist—because why the fuck not at this point?
Trump has Tom Cotton and Ted Cruz on his list.
I would pick Obama or Kamala Harris.
Someone who doesn’t break down into a screaming, crying fit after a few questions.
And Tom Cotton? Jesus Fuck, no. His comments on race relations alone are atrocious.

I would love to see Obama nominated, not only for the fact that he is an acknowledged expert on the constitution, but just to witness the herculean efforts required of the Republicans to find any rational objection let alone invent any dirt. Bravo @Jeruba. Mash McConnel’s turtle beak right into it.

@Jeruba Merrick Garland was Obama’s offer of a compromise. Garland is middle-aged, and a moderate. This was supposed to calm Republican worries that a young liberal would get a lifetime appointment.
Michelle has a degree in Constitutional Law.
BTW, a Supreme Court appointment doesn’t need to be a lawyer or judge. It is legal, though not necessarily smart, to appoint someone with no law background.
@si3tech
Great idea, especially considering that he doesn’t even know what’s in the Constitution.
@filmfann, yes, I acknowledge your point. I guess making an appointment that’s mainly a symbolic finger isn’t such a good idea. Maybe that’s why it’s best that it’s not up to me.
@Jeruba On the other hand. Garland reputedly is an excellent judge and was the lead investigator in the Oklahoma bombing trials. I don’t think he would be a bad choice – depending on his age.
Which are the primary reasons, McConnel would never allow his nomination to see the light of day.
Limiting myself to people he might actually nominate—Biden has already promised to pick a black woman—and assuming we’re looking for people who are actually qualified, I would say: Leondra Kruger, Leah Ward Sears, or Ketanji Brown Jackson. I would guess that Jackson is at the top of his short list right now, but I wouldn’t put money on it.
@Jeruba I agree. My first thought, when I read the question, was for Merrick Garland.
