Do you know anyone who doesn't brush their teeth (details inside)

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23798points) September 11th, 2020

I have been subscribing to a channel that makes compilation of Reddit post for various questions. There is one particular trend that really baffles me: whenever a video about life lessons show up, there will at least be one answer that tell people to brush their teeth. At first I thought it was just one odd answer in the sea of Reddit, but since it has become a theme for most life lesson videos now, I guess enough people have that problem for that kind of advice to show up.

This is really strange to me. I just can’t imagine anyone would go through their life without brushing their teeth, unless they’re too depressed to take care of themselves. I was taught to brush my teeth ever since I was very young, and even when I couldn’t do that by myself, I always had my parents do that for me. Brushing one’s teeth was also a lesson my teachers taught me since the time I first went to school, and it was even on text book. It has basically become a habit now and I just couldn’t stand even a day of not brushing my teeth.

Do you know anyone who doesn’t brush their teeth?

My 8 year old nephew came over and said he hadn’t brushed his teeth in over a week. I made him brush his teeth.

Otherwise no. That is really gross to be honest

I do not. Not in this culture. I know people who don’t floss and I know people who claim that flossing is stupid and bad and will argue about it. It was drilled into me from a young age that you should always brush your teeth and floss so I always do.

I think there must be such folks, although I can’t guess why.

(Disgust warning.)

I had lunch one day* with an acquaintance who was in town briefly, and when she opened up to take a bite I was appalled at the brown, broken, rotting mess in her mouth. I pretty much lost my appetite and could hardly wait to end the conversation and the visit. Maybe she had some terrible disease, but of course I didn’t dare ask. I would not have agreed to another date with her. Luckily it never came up.

*On Castro Street in Mountain View, @Demo, and she was from L.A.; so yes, in this culture.

My DIL didn’t brush her teeth, so several of them fell out or disintegrated over time. When she started working fulltime, we loaned her the money to help buy a whole set of dentures. It was fairly painful and took several stages over a year, but she is very proud of her new teeth.

People that are homeless often can’t brush their teeth on a. regular basis.

Active alcoholics and drug abusers often don’t brush their teeth because they pass out at night before they get a chance to perform their ablutions.

@Brian1946 HA! You crack me up! Thanks!

I know of a couple old guys that I suspect never or rarely brush their teeth and certainly never floss or visit a dentist. It’s creepy to talk to them as I’m fixated on their gross teeth and the tarter/plaque and junk build up on and between the teeth. I try not to look by concentrating on their eyes. It’s easy to loose track of what is being said.

I know other folks who never or rarely floss. They’re cruz’n for a bruz’n.

I’ve only really seen that in homeless and crackheads.

I know of people who don’t (clients of children’s services for one instance) but for the most part, people that I know either have decent teeth or great teeth.

Thank you everyone. I’m not here to judge anyone’s habit, I was just genuinely curious because I’ve been brushing my teeth my entire life.

@Brian1946 Just googled Mousey Tongue. Thank you for the random history lesson :D
