How do I decide what smartphone to purchase?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24892points) September 19th, 2020

Or should I ask the clerk from the specialty store? What is a phone that is better at being a phone with some room for text and apps.

If you just want a phone, you can pretty much just get the cheapest one available.

Well the clerk at the store would be better able to help you find one that fits just what you’re looking for. But it’s worth keeping in mind that his job is to upsell you as much as he can.

@ragingloli Thanks my phone lasted 4 years and was $150. The sim card resets the phone whenever I squeeze the phone.

@Darth_Algar Thanks.

The phones all do pretty much the same thing. Think about the service instead.

I strongly advise the key is NOT getting on the treadmill of a “free” phone that puts you on an expensive monthly plan.

I buy really nice used phones off eBay for $150 or less. My current phone was $66. I have a prepaid plan for $8/month (US Mobile). When I travel I buy more MB and minutes and the bill might be $30/month. Before I got off the treadmill, I was paying $70/month.

I just want a phone that is on a good network and doesn’t garble. Also unlimited talk and text. I might stick to Telus. Right now I have a Samsung galaxy note ji6 that I paid $150 four years ago. With a $43 a month plan. It keeps resetting on me.

Well as far as reception, that’s going to have more to do with the network than with the phone.

Since you’re already on a good, cheap plan, find another cheap Samsung phone & put your current Sim card in it. BEFORE buying the new phone, you might want to contact your current provider to verify that the new phone will be compatible with their service!!! I’m with Boost Mobile in the US & they do something different so that every phone out there isn’t necessarily compatible. It seems that most other companies have gone to a service that IS interchangeable. IF you ask the sales person at the store which phone that you should buy, remember that they work on commission & are going to steer you to a more expensive phone than you’ll probably need!!! With Samsung phones, it has been my experience that they will regularly last an easy 5 years where other brands last maybe 2 or 3 IF you’re lucky. So, I suggest that you look at another cheap Samsung & WAIT to buy it until you can verify with your company IF it will be compatible!!!

Another thought…have you considered going on your provider’s website to see what cheap phone that they have that will fit your needs??? They might have a refurbished Samsung Note J just like your current phone or possibly a newer version like a 7 or 8 for cheap.Being a refurb, it might possibly last you another 5 years!!!

^^^I have a cheap Samsung flip phone that I’ve been using for at least 8 years.

I would check reviews before purchasing and find out more information and data plans on the phone on there website.

@RedDeerGuy1 Have you considered doing a factory reset and start over with the phone that you have? It will clear up a lot of space and you can re-add the important apps that you truly miss. Your phone company should be able to save all your contacts. do the reset, and then add your contacts back. Samsung has a way that you can save your contacts and photos in their cloud and then download them back onto your phone. That service is free with my phone company and I’m assuming it’s a service that Samsung offers to everyone who has one of their phones

@SEKA Other than having 5 or so pictures my phones space is limited to updates. I have very little else my phone. I might try it soon. Thanks.

Ok am reseting my phone. Will update as soon as I can.

@all Update: I made 3 gigs worth of space. Thanks all. I will see if it keeps resetting my SIM card.

^ IF your sim card keeps resetting, you might want to take it in to your provider & have them look at it. It might only be a simple adjustment to fix it!!!

@RedDeerGuy1 Ive been away for a while. Did you decide to just continue to use your current phone?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@SEKA I reset my phone to factory settings. I have 3 GB of space. My phone keeps resetting saying that the sim card is loose. I will save up for a better phone when I have the money.

To decide which smartphone to purchase, should check the reviews on the particular phone you want. A good place would be on Youtube. They have reviews and can compare different types of phones in comparison.

@RedDeerGuy1 Have you looked at the prices of the Galaxy S8??? That was several phones back for me, but it lasted me for 3 years & I had tons of pics stored on it!!!
