Why do celebrities become/stay friends with people who make money by selling gossip?
I’m talking about those blogger types that just gossip about celebrities. Perez Hilton is a good example. At this point everyone should know that he makes his money by telling people’s secrets, so why associate with that? Why trust them and tell your secrets? I don’t understand being friends with someone who makes money by broadcasting drama, and then get upset/mad when your drama that you told them gets released.

They may need them in the future!!!
Much of the negative info we receive about famous people is generated from their own camp. There’s a saying “bad news is better than no news at all. It still puts you in the eyes of your fans.”
A couple things come to mind:
1. They want to be “in the know” before something big and juicy hits the news
2. They are hoping that if they share what drama is going on in their life that it might get downplayed or they will be portrayed positively.
Celebrities are almost all drenched in vanity, and all publicity is good publicity. Plus, it is free!
They want to stay in the news because it helps them get work. It’s the same reason celebrities wear short dresses and no panties and then go to events with paparazzi there to upskirt them as they get out of the limo. Worse than bad press is no press.
Some of these leaks may also be manufactured. Like when I want someone to know something but I don’t want them to know directly from me, I tell a blather mouth. The person on the ohter end of that news may have the wake up call I need them to get and I could deny saying it. I feel politicians do that a lot. Also, it works in celebrity divorces. Send a blather mouth with a crazy story that may ruin your ex reputation and get you sympathy. Then they can’t sue you saying that you purposely spread the false rumor. It becomes a he said she said. And if they claim it could’ve only come from yourself than that means its true. Blather mouths can be handy.
Free publicity.
I have an in-law who’s one of those bloggers. When a celebrity has a new project to promote, the person reaches out to him and acts all warm and friendly. It’s much like when the same celebrity goes on the late-night talk-show circuit and talks about whatever needs publicizing.
