Why do Nvidia and AMD not offer graphics cards with upgradeable VRAM?

Asked by ragingloli (52278points) October 9th, 2020

Even in models marketed to professionals?
The promise of GPU based rendering is promising, but the paltry amounts of VRAM on those cards makes it a complete non-option for the kinds of workloads I have.
Even a top-of-the-line Quadro RTX 8000, which costs over 5000$, only has 48GB of memory.

What would upgradeable VRAM look like on a graphics card? I imagine the card would have to be quite large to allow the user to install RAM modules.

They are already huge
granted, most of it is the cooler, but still.

Memory upgrade sockets would introduce potential unreliability, take up a lot more room on the board than soldered parts, and add cost…. and probably a lot of users would never use them.
