How much do you trust your gut instinct?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) October 13th, 2020

This was asked in 2009, so I thought I’d revive it.

My answer is almost never….unless “something” is telling me that a guy I’m with is not a good guy. I never, ever ignore that feeling and I get out.

It made me lose many a minesweeper game, so not at all.

My gut is telling me that I should eat apple pie for dinner when I get home. My gut can shut the hell up!

Sounds like a plan, TomG!

Pretty much trust my gut, it’s saved me a few times now.

Not much. Too many times I had a gut instinct or felt the vibes, if you will, that I had money coming to me. Never got squat.

My gut may not be right when it tells me yes; but when it tells me no, it’s pretty reliable.

My personal guideline is that when I go against my gut, I’m going to be wrong. That hasn’t been true 100% of the time, but enough to pay attention to and definitely more than half.

The tricky part is paying enough attention to the visceral response to get the message instead of shushing it or overriding it with wishful thinking. Sometimes I’m misled by no less a deceiver than rational thought. You can’t resolve an emotional issue with intellectual tools; but it’s easy to think that if you’re using your brains, you must be right.

It depends, if it’s the first piece of information I’m considering I usually know better than to trust my instinct. If I already have reviewed data and facts related to an issue, my gut instinct – informed by the related info – is another piece of information and I’d find it useful.

I go with my gut.

I trust it pretty well except when it says, “Go on eat those potato chips, they won’t make you fatter!” I should have trusted it more last year when it told me not to attempt that steep path.

Recently I did something financial which scared me to my bones, and my gut told me not to do it. I overrode those instincts, and did it. It now looks like a brilliant move.

@filmfann Well what’d you do?

Nomore_lockout's avatar

@filmfann Happy it worked for you pal. if I tried something like that, I’d end up so broke I couldn’t pay attention.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yeah @filmfann! What did you do? Did it have anything to do with a cruise ship and your famous wife?

I am not sharing what I did for personal privacy issues.

Oh. Well. Congratulations then!
