Some must be safe.

Have you considered trying it cubed with a splash of vodka?

Most “raw” water is iffy to drink in any large quantities. Getting a little water in your mouth when swimming is not really drinking. But there are bacteria and parasites in many bodies of water that could cause a human problems. If you are in the wild and need water, your best bet is to find a river, go 6–10 feet away from the shore and dig a hole. The water will filter through the ground and fill the hole. That is probably the safest way to drink it without treatment.

There are simple kits you can buy to test water for giardia and other bacterium before drinking. Hikers and campers use them.

As far as I know, Great Lake water is safe to drink, unless something has changed.

The county next to me supposedly has great water underground, which means the well water does not have to be treated. Same with the Hot Springs area in Arkansas and Saratoga Springs in NY. In fact, in Hot Springs Arkansas there is a large multi spigot fixture in town and people can walk up and fill potable drinking water whenever they want.

My bet is there are freshwater lakes and streams all over America that are safe to drink. I’m sure there must be places in other parts of the world. I would think Canada has a lot of freshwater, and of course Canada shares shoreline with the Great Lakes.

“Clean” or not lakes, rivers, streams, etc are still home to all kinds of animals who live, reproduce, feed, poop, die and rot in them. As well as all the bacteria and microscopic parasites that live in the water. Humans figured out long ago that even the cleanest water wasn’t necessarily safe to drink without treating it first (that’s part of the reason beer and wine have had such a prominent role in human civilization).

Yes, for some definition of safe.

I don’t know about bodies of water, but there must be some. As for running water, as in streams or rivers, if the water runs fast and is cold, it is deemed to be safe. But I would boil any unknown water just to be safe.
There is a stream in the mountains of northern Nevada that I have drank from many times with no problems. It runs fast and is VERY cold!

Lake Tahoe is amazingly pure.

The springs in the Rocky Mountians are safe. At least that’s what my dad told us.

All my survivalist shows say do not do that unless you’re dying.
The parasites hitting your bowels will make you wish you were dead.
Gotta agree with @Darth_Algar on this one.
