What beans should I buy for practice?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24886points) October 17th, 2020

To save money, and improve health?
What beans should I experiment on cooking? I tried before Covid and they didn’t soak properly and I had to toss.

Also what YouTube videos do to recommend on shopping and cooking beans?

Also how many types of beans are found in a typical store or online?

I have a stove, electric frying pan and slow cooker.

I am open to chili recipes.

Cooking beans is not difficult.

Cover the beans with lots of water and let them soak overnight in the refrigerator.

Pour off the water.

Cover the beans with water, bring to a boil, and simmer for an hour, stirring every so often.

Test the beans for softness and check every fifteen minutes until they have the desired softness.

Have you tried canned beans? They taste pretty good and are not very expensive.

@LostInParadise No. I am heading off to the superstore. Will update later.

I’ve heard that kidney shaped beans should be soaked in a pot of water with a pinch of baking soda added for 12–24 hours then slow cook them. Non-kidney shaped beans are soaked for the same time but instead of adding baking soda, you add vinegar.

Update: bought pinto beans black beans, and blackeye beans. Smallest amount in bulk mini containers. $5 worth of beans

@RedDeerGuy1 good selections. Follow the simple instructions from @LostInParadise and you’ll be in good shape. I would add to make sure to rinse a couple times between soaking and cooking – that gets rid of a lot of the indigestible triple sugars that cause gassy indigestion.

Spices: per your tastes get some chili powder, cumin powder, garlic powder, curry powder and add to the mix while cooking.
Serve with some grated cheese on top!

I love beans. Use Google to search for recipes. Follow the directions in the recipe.

Out of what you purchased, I prefer the Black eyed peas. I don’t have a slow cooker, but I do have an electric pressure cooker and it cooks great beans without having to soak them overnight. Since you have a slow cooker, I found these on YouTube if you want to cook some Pinto Beans, or this for Black Beans, or this General Info vid. Surely one of them will work for you

Update Yuck! I made them wrong. Well anyway I am on a low FODMAPS diet and can’t have them any way.
