I thought The Sense of an Ending was worth four stars; but I read it more than eight years ago and don’t remember much now, other than that not remembering much is kind of what the book’s about.
Have you ever wondered whether blurbs that call a book or movie “unforgettable” were written more than a week after finishing them?
I’m seriously considering that one. He won the Man Booker Prize for it.
I have forgotten so many books it’s frightening. I wonder if I would surprise you if I told you what I found unforgettable.
Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon is one.
Eros, the Bittersweet by Anne Carson is another.
I don’t know much about Julian Barnes, but I enjoyed the one work of his I have read, The Noise of Time, a fictionalized account of the life of Dmitri Shostakovich (it was recommended to me by a fellow classical music aficionado). If you’re interested at all in Russian/Soviet history or classical composers, I would recommend it. Reading the descriptions of The Man in the Red Coat and The Sense of an Ending has piqued my interest so I may have to see if my library has them this week. :)
