How many supreme courts does the united states have?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) November 6th, 2020

On CNN they are talking about the Pennsylvania supreme court? I thought that they only had one for the whole country? Why do they use the same names for state courts?

There is one Federal Supreme Court, but each state has their own, too. Feds trump States.

For example the legalization of all drugs (Oregon) or marijuana (many states), a state can legalize but Feds can still prosecute you. Make sense?

The state supreme court is the highest state court in the U.S. state court system. ... Federal courts may overrule a state supreme court decision only when there is a federal question which springs up a federal jurisdiction.

The one Supreme Court of The United States. aka SCOTUS Plus probably one in each state. And there are district courts.

@elbanditoroso As far as I know PR does have a Supreme Court and I think the other territories do too like Guam, etc. Since they are their own countries they would need their own supreme court wouldn’t they?

New York state is extra confusing. Every county has a branch of the Supreme Court. They aren’t really supreme, they would be called district courts elsewhere.

The actual supreme (small “s”) court is the New York State Court of Appeals.

One for each state.
One at the federal level.
