@Darth_Algar when Optometrists check your eyes they use a gadget you look through and they ask you what is clearer 1 or 2, 1 is one type of lens and 2 is different.

Why would you lie? That makes no sense.

@anniereborn Not everyone is logical. Maybe a teenager doesn’t want glasses because he is self conscious.

Also maybe that explains why sometimes we can tell the difference between 1 and 2?

In the Little House on the Prairie Mary lies about seeing light. If someone remembers this episode please show a link.

If someone doesn’t want glasses, but needs them, the eye chart will not be kind to them.

@anniereborn All you have to do is memorize the chart. Most charts are the same The first letter is always “E” .

Yes, I’m well aware of this. I’ve been wearing glasses for 30 years. The question itself, however, makes little sense and would have benefited from additional detail as to how/what exactly the TC meant.

@Darth_Algar I was wondering why the optometrist keeps pressuring me to give an answer over and over when I really can’t tell the difference between one choice of the other. In my mind the “checking if I was lying” was the low hanging fruit to why it keeps happening.

Actually I would like a real answer about how the nuts and bolts of the eye doctors machine works? It would be simpler if the patient could adjust one dial per eye for themselves until the can read perfect. No huge complex machine. Just two dials.

IF you don’t lie to them, the will have NOTHING with which to catch you!!!

@LadyMarissa When I get an eye exam I get pressured to say anything. My optometrists for years end up telling me to guess. 1 or 2. Just pick one. Either choice is a lie. What are the mechanics of eye exams?

LadyMarissa's avatar

Neither choice is a lie because it ALL is dependent on how well you can actually see. You don’t see very well, so I think that it would be extremely important to tell your eye doc when you can see better so he can make sure that you get glasses that actually work for you!!!

@RedDeerGuy1

He isn’t trying to trick you or catch you in a lie or anything. He’s trying to figure out exactly what prescription strength you need. It is, as @LadyMarissa said, imperative that you be completely honest with him rather than just saying anything. The wrong prescription can actually damage your eyesight worse than it already is.

@Darth_Algar What eye disorders exist where you lose the ability to tell the difference bewteen one and two? I feel embarrassed when I can’t tell the difference. Is that normal?

Darth_Algar's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1

That’s something you really should be asking your optometrist. Don’t be embarrassed, be honest. He’s there for a reason. If everyone had great eyesight then he wouldn’t have a job.

@RedDeerGuy1 When asked the difference between 1 & 2 & you see none, tell your doc that you saw NO difference as that might give him some IMPORTANT info!!! You don’t necessarily NEED TO see a difference, it is just an option. I have told my optometrist that I saw NO difference & he just added it to his notes & I’ve never received new glasses that I couldn’t see with so there’s NO reason to be embarrassed. NO difference is as important as 1 or 2!!!

I’ve been wearing glasses for many years. I routinely tell the Doc when I can’t tell the difference. It helps her to determine a more accurate prescription for my glasses.

The problem is not telling a lie, but simple ..meaning that the person has trouble making decisions.

Also sometimes the differences are so minuscule, that either choice would not matter that much to choose.
