What else do you use toothpicks for?

Asked by Jeruba (56064points) November 7th, 2020

Aside from their designated purpose, their raison d’etre, those little wooden sticks have a variety of uses.

When do you reach for these humble implements, other than for some dental purpose?

What would you use for this if you didn’t have a toothpick?

Well, in the distant past, I’ve used them for arts/crafts and as weapons in warfare between plasticine figures…

This may seem a little gross:

I use them to get earwax out of ear buds.

I’ve used them to dip peanut butter balls in chocolate. I’ve tried those little wire hanger things, but they don’t work for me.

Testing cakes, guys? Cakes? Very important! Go bake a cake. Test it with a toothpick, take it out of the oven, and start to feel better.

I’m pretty dull, I mostly use them to test the doneness of cakes and stuff.

To pick up smoked oysters.

To move tiny dabs of glue around on crafts projects.

To clean crumb debris out of the cracks where the table leaves come together.

To push stuff out of the the holes of a colander.

My grandma had a porcelain Christmas tree-shaped table ornament with holes all over it, into which toothpicks would suspend impaled olives – that was a highlight for me of her Christmas Eve dinners.

@Jeruba We are making a Biden/Harris celebratory cake right now! :D

Toothpicks and skewers are actually good for connecting corrugated cardboard. Sounds random. But handy for crafts.

Also fun for STEM activities like building structures with toothpicks and grapes or gumdrops.

Think I’m going to use some to make mini Biden/Harris flags for our cake. :)

Tooth picks can be helpful when giving your Instant Pot a good deep cleaning!!!

I have put them into frosted baked goods to form a plastic wrap tent. The dessert may look like a hedgehog, but the frosting stays intact.

^Ha ha, hedgehog!

I use them to open those mini lemon juice bottles.

I used a toothpick to clean the bridge of my glasses today and it was just what I needed. I wouldn’t have thought to use a toothpick for this if I hadn’t had them fresh in my mind!
