What do you think of Harry Styles in Vogue?

Asked by KNOWITALL (29884points) November 16th, 2020

The details are in the article, but the jist is that he is the first solo artist with a Vogue cover and he chose to make a commentary on fashion by wearing high end dresses for the shoot.

He’s getting lots of mixed reviews and hate on his choices, but doesn’t seem to care much what anyone thinks.

Quote from Harry:
“In terms of how I wanna dress, and what the album sleeve’s gonna be, I tend to make decisions in terms of collaborators I want to work with. I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool.”

Does his ambiguity bother you in any way or is it admirable and simply a rejection of labels and boxes?

What other people wear is not on the list of issues that concern me.

Harry looks great. I love that he wears what he wants to and isn’t bogged down by labels.

“Anytime you are putting barriers up in your life, you’re limiting yourself, ” is his quote on the cover.

This isn’t the first time he’s worn a dress or clothes that are considered more feminine. His Beauty Papers edition was excellent. People only care now because he has broken a barrier in the fashion mag world as the first male to be featured on the cover of American Vogue (Vogue in other countries has featured men.)

As the kids say, it’s a cultural reset.

I couldn’t agree more with you both. I’m frankly surprised it’s raising eyebrows at all, at this point in history. Musicians especially have always taken liberties with fashion, so when I read some of the tweets, I was shocked!

I do not care.
But this is just ridiculous:
There is no society that can survive without strong men. The East knows this. In the west, the steady feminization of our men at the same time that Marxism is being taught to our children is not a coincidence. It is an outright attack.

Clearly that person has ignored the popularity of KPop bands, and the general dominance of feminine looking male heroes in popular culture in the east.

@ragingloli Right? Hello, what about Poison and Motley Crue, very popular manly bands from the 80’s. I thought we were past this.

There is no society that can survive without strong men. Personally, I think that it takes a VERY strong man to wear a dress when you know what the backlash in most likely going to be…Actually, this is great PR!!!

This is from the recent Final Fantasy 7 Remake
It is the male protagonist of the game in a dress. The point being that he is so feminine looking, that you just have to put him in a dress to make him indistinguishable from a woman.
And it was the same in the 1997 original.

Um…David Bowie, Adam Ant, Poison, Prince. Androgyny in music is not new. Let’s move on Tipper Gore. We got bigger fish to fry people.

Oh, and as @ragingloli mentioned – K-Pop Bands! C’mon now. They’re adorable.

It is also funny and telling that these right wing reactionaries only ever attack feminine looking men.
No mention of men who are fat, ungroomed, rotten-teethed and wearing dirty, sweaty wife beaters.
Are they not unmanly, too?
In reality, it is not about adhering to some “ideal” of masculinity, but the disdain of being similar to the perceived “inferior gender”. It is just misogyny by proxy.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@cookieman Exactly, that’s why I’m surprised it’s even worth discussing tbh.

Hey, I love Kpop and anime.. I have to wait until my husband falls asleep to watch all my subtitles though. :( Someday I want to go to Hyori’s Bed and Breakfast just to play with the dogs. haha!

Vikings have become kinda the current cultural image of the manliest of manly men. Which might be, but…they were also kind of obsessed with how they looked. They’d wear earrings and all kinds of jewelry, use eye shadow, sometimes more makeup than that that as well. They’d dress themselves in the finest threads they could obtain. Kept their hair neat, clean and well-maintained. They bathed to what was considered an obsessive degree for their time. Hell, they were the metrosexuals of their day and age.

Couldn’t care less about Harry Styles or what he wears.

Candace Owens is a grifting propagandist.

It’s hard to tell whether she’s really a moron, or dishonest.

However, she is motivated, ambitious, and relatively attractive, and knows all the dumb ‘culture wars’ tropes and right-wing talking points, which really doesn’t take any intelligence.

I guess that’s enough for her to become “successful”.

My only issue with the Harry Styles’ cover photo on Vogue is I’m not a fan of the dress.

Candace Owens is getting absolutely slammed on her instagram feed on the “mentions” by Harry Styles stans. it’s really funny. As my 19 year old says, “Don’t mess with Directioners”.

I am in complete favor of men having more clothing choices.

I am in complete favor of everyone having more clothing choices.

Skirts and dresses are fun to wear. I’m happy that many men, including Harry Styles, are starting to make that a more mainstream choice for men.

Bring back the kilts!!

Don’t know much about him but certainly don’t care if he wants to wear a dress on a magazine cover. I find androgynous men quite attractive usually, hellooooo Prince!
