Best treatment for a splinter?

First, good job getting most of the splinter out. Next, lay off the peroxide, it doesn’t help and can do more damage than good. Third, I suggest soaking your finger in warm water for about 10 minutes (until the skin is soft), and then, with a sterilized needle (put the needle in boiling water for 5 minutes), gently peel away the top layer of skin to reveal more of the splinter (and squeeze out more pus). You can then use tweezers to try and remove the residual splinter. Don’t worry so much if you can’t get it all out because it will come out eventually. Lastly, I suggest you use a triple antibiotic cream on the wound. You can repeat these steps at your discretion. Good luck.

I use Ichthammol salve, when I have a splinter or some other small particle that I can not get out of my skin. It looks disgusting, but works great. You should be able to get some brand of it at most drug stores. I put it on and then cover with a band aid, I leave it on all day and then wash the area with warm soapy water, put triple antibiotic ointment (neosporin is my preference) and cover it with a band aid. I find that this method is less painful and less likely to lead to further infection than ‘digging deeper’, so to speak. Be careful with squeezing it and irritating the skin around it more, because that can make the infection worse. However, I am not a medical expert. If you notice that it is becoming worse, if you see reddening of the skin around the area and especially if you see red ‘streaks’ coming from the wound, go see a doctor. It is rare, but you can end up with blood poisoning which can be lethal.

The outcome of this is that I got it all out on the first try. The warm water solution was much better than the peroxide one. I cleaned it all out and applied a thin layer of triple antibiotic. Al better now. Thanks!
