Cinephiles - which streaming services are you finding the best for watching new movies?

Asked by janbb (63218points) December 11th, 2020

I watch TCM for old classics and have Amazon Prime and Netflix. I can find a lot of movies on them but then read about new movies coming out on other services or on the web. It gets frustrating trying to track them down and my lovely local art house theater has shuttered for good.

Are there any services in particular that you find useful? I don’t really want to subscribe to a million things.

I personally like Hulu. Hulu + Netflix go together well for movies

I think it’s easiest to find them for rent on Amazon. Sometimes you have to wait awhile. Have you signed up for Kanopy yet? It’s connected to your library so you get all kinds of stuff.

@tinyfaery Thanks. Yes, I do have Kanopy.

I also have found some on virtual cinema sites.

I have Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, and Apple TV+. I only pay for Disney+ because the other three are included in other services I pay for anyway.

I have found some good stuff on Netflix, but frankly their interface is terrible and poorly organized so I do not like surfing around there. I usually use the search feature to find something I have heard or read about.

Same issue with Amazon Prime. If I hear good things, I’ll go search for it there.

So far, I have only used Peacock to binge watch old shows (Carol Burnett Show, Law & Order).

Disney+ and Apple TV+ have the best user interface by far and they are very easy to navigate around and find stuff. That said, they both have the least amount of new content of the bunch.

Sure you could watch every Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel and National Geographic movie/show ever if you want, but there is very little new stuff – YET. Just yesterday they announced a truckload of new content over the next few years.

Unlike Disney+, Apple TV+ has no back catalog •and* very little new content. That said, most of the content they do have is very good. I really liked Defending Jacob, See, For All Mankind, and the Morning Show. Next up, I want to watch Greyhound, On the Rocks, and Tehran.

If I had to pay for all straight outta pocket (and I might eventually), based on my tastes, I would probably only keep Disney+ and Netflix. Maybe Apple TV+ once they get more content in there.

@cookieman I took Disney+ for a couple of months to see Hamilton but dropped it because it didn’t have much that interested me. You even had to search hard to find the classic Disney animated films.

@cookieman Tehran is good. I recommend Ted Lasso. Greyhound is good if you’re kind of a naval geek. It was sort of a project for Tom Hanks to tell a WW2 story that hasn’t often been told. It’s okay, but it’s full of jargon. He did try to keep it as accurate as possible.

I have Netflix and Disney+. I had Hulu, but was unhappy with their content.
I just got a new iMac, so I am supposed to get Apple+ with that, but I haven’t signed up yet.
I am considering getting HBOMax. I like what they will do with new releases.

@janbb

Are you looking strictly for new releases that you might not see anywhere else (like European cinema, I noticed you said “arthouse”), or just stuff like that, new or not?

I don’t know if this is quite what you’re looking for, but you might check out the Criterion Channel.

@Darth_Algar What prompted the question was reading a bunch of great reviews for new foreign and indie movies so yes, mainly that. A friend has Criterion and I should look at that.

I guess I’m just really reluctant to spend money on a million different streaming services. As I said, I do have Prime and Netflix but they don’t have everything and it kind be hard to find specific titles so you end up just settling.

Maybe I have to get used to paying for individual films online on platforms such as Virtual Cinema.

@janbb I still have Netflix dvd rental, and I can find most odd and interesting things on there. I pay $5 a month for two movies, which is a bit less than renting them from streaming. Anachronistic, I know, but effective!

I have Disney + which includes Hulu. I also have Netflix and Prime. I don’t know which is best but I like having choices. I would love to “cut the cord” and get rid of cable for good, but I like having easy access to the evening news, SNL, late night TV, etc.
