What do you think about Joe Biden and Kamala Harris being chosen as Person of Year by Time magazine?

Asked by JLeslie (65734points) December 11th, 2020

Here’s a link.

I didn’t even read what it says, but you can see the cover photo. I have a strong opinion about it that I am withholding for now.

I wonder your initial feeling about it, without reading any articles. Your gut reaction. If you don’t agree with the choice, who would you have preferred to see on the cover?

I don’t have a strong opinion on it and I have no other person offhand that I think should get it, but I kind of feel like, there’s nobody else that was a better candidate? Maybe Fauci?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’m fine with it. But @jca2 made a good point about Fauci.

I’m shocked Time magazine still exists.

I don’t have a strong opinion about it, either. As a matter of fact, I feel like it is a farce. trump got it in 2016 for no other reason than he was the president elect at the time. As the editor(s) said at that time, it wasn’t necessarily a person that had a GOOD influence, just that they had an influence on the events of that particular year.
In my opinion, it’s not really an honor. Hitler, Stalin, Ayatollah Khomeini and Rudy Giuliani have been on the list.

It seems appropriate enough, but I can’t help also seeing it as a digital salute to Trump.

And on the same day, “Der Spiegel” named Trump Loser of the year. Hah. He had that coming.

canidmajor's avatar

I think it’s appropriate.

@JLeslie, ”I have a strong opinion about it that I am withholding for now.” Why?

Nothingburger.

No one reads Time any more – it made itself irrelevant.

I don’t read it anymore, but I don’t think many of their choices are anything more than pandering for sales. Print media in 2020–1?

Jeruba's avatar

I’m still a print subscriber, you bet. For all its shortcomings, the print process has significant advantages over electronic media, not the least of which is that it doesn’t change once it’s in my hands. I pay for several print subscriptions just to do my part to help keep the medium alive. If print goes down the tubes, it’s only a matter of time before we’re really, really sorry.

No One.

Does it have to be an American? Maybe it should be the Turkish-German couple who made one of the vaccines?

Or Fauci?

Maybe we should have a virus of the year. That little spiky red dude i see all over would win that hands down.

I think its great, better than Trump. We were having a laugh this morning in bed about how Trump will be butt hurt if he doesn’t get it. Maybe the Rolling Stone, Trump? LMAO

si3tech's avatar

II do not think of them. Period.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@jerbuba I’m a big fan of the printed word, but mostly books. Not sure you can make money at it though.

It’s strange to give that award to someone who says that “nothing will fundamentally change” and that giving healthcare to everyone during a pandemic is a bad idea.

gondwanalon's avatar

It’s ridiculous. They haven’t done anything.

Hamb's avatar

^ Unfortunately, they have.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I love Obama but I thought it was ridiculous that he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize before he’d even done anything.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

@Dutchess_III I agree, I felt the same way.

Jeruba's avatar

The Time cover is not an award. It’s for “people who greatly impacted the country and world during the calendar year.” I agree that this choice seems to anticipate the future more than it measures the past. But it’s purpose is to recognize who’s been a huge newsmaker and not to say “attaboy.” Nobody thought they were giving Stalin a pat on the back in 1939.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

But with an ego as big as Trump’s, he had to want it. Which is why my wife and I were laughing so hard at the thought of him being knocked out of selection. Looks like we got our wish.

Jeruba's avatar

But he got it in 2016.

He just made an idiot of himself by stating publicly that he expected to get it again the next year. That’s the same thing he’s doing now with the election, which is, yes, over.

Darth_Algar's avatar

I have no opinion one way or the other. Past recipients have included Donald Trump, Adolph Hitler, Joseph Stalin (twice), the personal computer and “You” (whatever that means). Hard to take that too seriously.

rockfan's avatar

Oh sorry, meant to say “title”, not award

misfit's avatar

Meh. I was surprised it wasn’t frontline healthcare workers. They were on the shortlist and I feel more deserving.
