My daughter interviewed me for a school project yesterday and one of the questions was “what were some trends when you were in high school?”
Music trends were New Wave music and the start of the disco era. Also rap music just started to be popular. Hair trends were Farrah Fawcett hairstyles (layers, with “wings” which were bangs that were parted in the middle). The way I explained clothing trends to my daughter were that some girls wore designer jeans and high heels, like Candies. Some girls wore flannel shirts and shoes that were called “Little Abners” which were tan leather short flat boots. I was into flannel shirts and Little Abners.

I graduated high school in 2009 and millennials loved the “Soulja Boy” dance. It was the bane of my existence.
One of the worst songs ever recorded.

@rockfan I graduated in 2009 too. “Crank That” was big my junior year.
Other trends (of my high school in the Bay Area): lots of girls wore Uggs, “hella” was said a lot as well as “sick” to mean cool, the guys wore no-show socks and sagged their jeans, we all discovered Facebook and posted on it constantly, shaggy hair was popular (though that reached its peak in middle school and was on the wane as high school progressed), rap was big, Akon played at every dance…this is just what I can recall of off the top of my head :P
Streaking.
A 50’s revival.
The mafia.
Songwriters performing their own material.
Sneaking video games, usually Risk, in the learning resource center.
I graduated high school in 1989. Tons of hair. High hair and mullets.
Also an 80s high school kid.
Big hair held up by Aquanet, mouse, and gel.
Acid-wash jeans.
Parachute pants.
Metal hair bands like Poison, Motley Crew, Def Leppard.
Pop stars like Madonna, Prince
The Chevrolet Camaro. Seems like everyone had one.
Reebok sneakers.
Mtv and the VJays.
Most of my answers are similar to yours regarding music and hairstyles, except the clothing would be a little different.
We had the designer jeans part. Jordache and Sergio Valente were big and we girls wore them skin tight. I remember the Candies shoes too. I don’t remember if I specifically wore them with jeans, I remember wearing them with short skirts.
Also, Cavaricci pants that had a very distinct waistline and low pleats that created a long torso.
There were also the preppy kids who wore penny loafers and khakis and collared shirts. Sometimes they added a sweater around the shoulders.
Punk kids had Mohawk hairstyles or something out of the ordinary. They tended to wear black.
Essentially a cleaned up hippie look.
A lot of “rough” leather (the suede side) with a lot of fringe for both girls and boys. Leather headbands for girls. Long straight hair for everyone.
Jeans with bell bottoms.
Boys who couldn’t afford leather wore blue nylon bomber jackets.
Those who skied wore ski parkas to school on cold days, with every lift ticket from that season still attached.
I was just remembering Sportsac purses were popular. I never had one.
I remember in HS a lot of guys wore Members Only nylon jackets.
I remember that too. Also, Adidas sweat outfits.
Frye boots.
Slouch boots worn outside the pants leg.
Banana clips for the hair. I almost bought one a few months ago.
Sideburns, plaid pants, longer hair, damn we were goofy. Two popular songs were Montego Bay and Sing a Song of Temma Harbor. I know, go figure. Hey peeps, I didn’t set the trends : (
LAN parties and Komasaufen.
And that ends my trip down memory lane. I was more of a hippie type myself, those were just general trends. (For the squares)
@JLeslie: I remember the guys wearing denim jackets with rock groups painted on the back panel.
Levi 501s with embroidery.
Mostly like @cookieman.
I was a different embodiment each year.

Witnessed my older siblings going though teen phases and had a good laugh watching them ..impersonate Elvis ( Academic nerdy older brother changed his looks. It was hilarious!)
Younger brother used to wear fancy knitted alpine skiing sweaters with a suede coat and neat look. ( he got a lot of girls interested in him and was good looking too).I assume he was trying for the rich debonair look?
Older sister dressed in Poodle skirt and oxford white and black shoes for a Holden party
(I assume it was for a Halloween party..hahah)..my sister and I laughed so hard , it kept us entertained for years just thinking about them!
Between 1963— 1965
My sister and I were young teenagers ( 13–17)
The Beatles and the Beatle hairstyles were popular as well as there songs, bell bottom pants
( usually cream or white color) weird loud designs , think abstracts, ribbons on dresses
( like a tie),The Mod look ( basically long straight hair with bangs ( blonds) ,sandals like Roman leather bound up the leg or short at the ankles.

Lady Bug dresses & penny loafers. Skirt length had to be below the knees. Girl’s hair was teased sky high & boys hair was long & shaggy much like the Beatles. Only the clic girls were allowed to date the jocks.
