If you were to get any song lyric tattooed on you, what would it be?
And what is the special meaning to you?
I’m thinking I would get either, “And in a year, a year or so. This will slip into the sea.” Meaning sort of like “This too shall pass.” Or, “Give incent to play.” Meaning, spread joy. Both are Beirut lyrics.

Are you referring to just the title of the song, or a verse from the song?
Question reads:
If you were to get any song lyric tattooed on you, what would it be?
In some cases the title is part of the song lyric, but in others, it isn’t.
The words, 59th Street Bridge Song never appear in the lyrics of that song.
No word tattoos for me. Not that I’m against them, I just wouldn’t want anything on me someone might want to read.
@ Jack, would you maybe like to have “Feeling Groovy” tattooed on your arm?
“I am the luckiest” by Ben Folds would be my lyrical tattoo.
Anything by Milli Vanilli….although I guess it would have to be a henna tattoo then.
Let it Be, which is the title track from the Beatles 12th Album which was ranked #86 in Rolling Stones 500 greatest albums. The single Let It Be was a number one single for 2 weeks on the US Pop Charts. The phrase itself Let it Be can be helpful to us when we are in situations where caution is needed or we realize that we must let nature take its course. Alexander Pope said in his poem An Essay on Criticism “For Fools Rush in Where Angels Fear to Tread” this can lead to a chaotic situation and at times it is best to just let things be.
well, my favorite song ever is an instrumental but i wouldn’t mind getting its title (“any colour you like”) in like, pretty rainbowish colours.
Radiohead—I’m a creep, I’m a Weirdo
@aneedleinthehayy – Love, love, love Beirut! I like both of your ideas.
I’d get “En Það Besta Sem Guð Hefur Skapað Er Nýr Dagur” which is Icelandic for “But The Best Thing God Has Created Is A New Day.” It’s a lyric from a Sigur Ros song.
John Lennon- “Imagine all the people living life in Peace”
@SuperMouse: That’s a terrific suggestion!
There are so many songs with lyrics that I like, but my tattoo would have to represent one of the three constants in my life: love of God, love of Country, and love of my children.
I would choose “how great Thou art” or “God bless America” (Can you even hear this in your head without hearing Kate Smith’s rendition??)
To represent the love of my children I would choose the “lyrics” a mother sang to her son in Robert Munsch’s book… “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be”.
Kanye West has a song called “last Call” Where he says:
“Last year, shopping my demo, I was trying to shine. Every Motherfucker told me that I couldn’t rhyme. Now I can let these Dreamkillers kill my self-esteem or use my arrogance as my steam, to power my dreams!” I love this verse. It says that people are going to try to stop you but you have to see pass that and move forward.
@Divalicious: I always enjoy knowing that there is another person in this world who remembers Kate Smith singing that song.
I remember hearing the story of the time that FDR introduced her to a visiting dignitary saying, “This is Kate Smith; THIS is America!”
Thanks for the memory jog!
@mouse: I’m always a little shocked that someone else knows “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds. That’s one of my favorite songs of all time. That whole album is really a treat.
I’m actually getting a partial lyric next month. I’ll be doing the Tom Petty logo with the words “Same sad echo when you lie”
@Poof that is the most beautiful love song ever. Of all time. Period. I am going to have to check out the album.
@Mouse: at the risk of sounding cheesy, that’s my song with my boyfriend.
Aww, I think it sounds sweet.
I just realized how out of place my answer seems when directly preceded by “Aww, I think it sounds sweet,” regarding songs of beauty, love, and joy.
@shockvalue: If it makes you feel any better, the song I mentioned, “Echo”, isn’t about joy at all. It’s a very sad song.
@Shock, when I first read your response I thought – this being a musical thread and all, ”Roxanne does get annoying after awhile, and Every Breath you Take was way over played, but ‘F’ them?”
“If you’ve got a voice, rejoice.” It is from The Clarks song Hey You . This has two meanings to me, one is personal and is in regards to two people I lost to suicide. The second has to do with being a free person in a free country, the fact that I can speak my mind is something to be grateful for, no matter how bad things may seem. If I had a to pick a second choice it would be Born to Late because I really identify with the lyrics of that song and I’ve been told I’m an ‘old soul’.
@ poof: I guess that’s why he plays with the heartbreakers…
@supermouse: hardy har har :P
Just cuz you feel it, doesn’t mean it’s there.
winner: Morning glory by oasis
runner up: Closer by nine inch nails
Billy Squire: Nobody knows what dreams I see.
How about humorous variations on existing lyrics?
“Nobody knows, the trouble obscene…”
Don’t it always seem to go
that you don’t know what you’ve got
‘til it’s gone?
Joni Mitchell
“Gimme the Beach Boys and free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock & roll, and drift away…”
this one is between two people.
if we go down (on one person)
we go down together (on the other person)
@dollfacee ~ I like that a lot! (What song is that?)
there’s no ‘i’ in team
taking back sunday
“We only get so many days. Now I have one less.”
“If you can’t afford a broken nose, how can you afford a fight?”
“And we learn as we age we’ve learned nothing.”
“If I told you I felt ageless, would you tell me I’m not old?”
“I am a visitor here. I am not permanent.”
“Put some passion in the play because we all go anyway.”
… One of those.
@knotmyday, YES! That’s beautiful. I want to get that now.
”Pretend the dove from above is a dragon and your feet are on fire…”
or
”Sturdy up, sturdy up your heart, for the road is long ahead…”
“Wasted away again in Margaritaville” would be a top contender.
But….
“Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage” would be what I got.
Bob Segers turn the page , “Here I am, on the road again” are the lyrics. It just reminds me of all of my highs and lows in my life mixed with pavement, and just traveling on them every day. I think I would have each individual word from the lyrics spread out over my body.
Great song. I like Metallica’s version better though.
Metallica did an awesome remake. Seger put alot of heart into the song, but not saying James Hetfield didn’t, I just like the original.
I just prefer Het’s voice to Seger’s.
@Poof, I can stand Bob Seger’s voice for a single song, then I just can’t take it anymore.
well as soon i read this i thought of “i hope you have the time of your life”
Then the lights came on, it was all a scene
Bend back, give head it’s not pornography
If you do it with lights then it’s art you see
If you do it with a twist
Yes, artistically
lyrics from “One Hit” by The Knife
Apparently I already have song lyrics tattooed on me. I did not know this when I got it tattooed. They go across my upper back.
I can’t think of any song that I’d get tattooed. But I am going to get a short paraphrased sentence from the bible, tattooed on my arm. From Psalms. And no, I’m not religious.
i’m thinking about getting “you can’t break out of a circle that you never knew you were in” around my wrist. it’s from the song moab by bright eyes. there are so many song lyrics conor oberst (and others) have written that mean a lot to me, but i think this one applies to so much, and it just really sticks with me.
welcome to the hotel california
i know it sounds stupid just based of the lyrics but they mean alot to me. my dad is an avid guitar player and one of my favorite childhood memories is of falling asleep in the RV with the window beside my bunkbed cracked, just so i could hear him play around the campfire outside ..i’d always doze off listening to the sound of guitar strings. but most likely i won’t get the lyrics to this song tattooed but i’ll get the guitar tabs to the picking of the song, running down my ribs or leg. :)
“If I can’t have you, let love set you
free to fly your pretty wings” -Maxwell
“You’re my survival. You’re my living proof;
My love is alive, not dead.” -edwin mccain

I know I can be gray
But I know this loser’s living fortunate
Cause I know you will love me either way” its lyrics to colorful by the verve pipe. im going to get it around my dagger heart tattoo
“Love’s the funeral of hearts
and an ode for cruelty” and
“oh how wrong we were to think
that immortality meant never dying”
