Did the conspiracy theorists forget about the war on Christmas this year?

Asked by JLeslie (65789points) December 25th, 2020 from iPhone

I’m happy to report that I didn’t see any BS about a war on Christmas this year. No one upset that someone in a store said Happy Holidays. No one accusing imaginary people of hating Christmas and trying to ban the phrase Merry Christmas. Even on fluther we usually have one Q about it (maybe this is it) but I haven’t noticed one this year.

I guess covid conspiracy theories were sufficient for 2020.

Have you seen any of the arguments about Merry Christmas or whether to tell kids there is a Santa Claus?

They were too busy making up other conspiracy theories about the evil nasty democrats.

Or maybe, just maybe, there was absolutely no evidence of the war on Christmas after all.

You kidding? Too many things too worry about this year. Just found out Bill Gates is the Anti Christ Covid vaccine is the Mark of the Beast and NASA is lieing about the planets and outer space. This is the biggest scoop since Jade Helm! One plot at a time please!

Conservatives got quiet about the war on Christmas when it turns out the biggest proponent of getting rid of Christmas is Melania Trump

@zenvelo Worst First Lady ever. Can’t wait for Dr Jill Biden.

@Shhhh! Silence knave! Didn’t you get the memo? It comes from Dems/libs, it’s all the news that is news. If it comes from us, crickets chirping! @zenvelo

I find that cashiers will say “Merry Christmas” so maybe they’ve defeated the whole debate.

Haven’t heard much of that fake outrage this year. It’s been nice. Guess people have bigger things to worry about. :)

They’re too focused on the intergalactic conspiracy to steal the election from God Emperor Trump. The War on Christmas will have to wait.

SEKA's avatar

I haven’t seen anything on the war on Christmas. I have noticed many people saying “Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday”. It’s said with such discomfort that I feel that they are trying to cover all the bases.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

Bill O’Reilly isn’t on TV anymore. Turning Christmas into a hate fest was his schtick.

mazingerz88's avatar

They didn’t forget. Right now it’s whatever trump their leader is wailing and screaming about. Election cheating.

SEKA's avatar

Think back, part of trumps campaign back in 2016 was to bring back Merry Christmas. So, none of the right is going to forget to say it

Yellowdog's avatar

Most people are saying Merry Christmas anyway now—there has been a rebellion against the generic ‘happy holiday’. Especially under Trump.

And commercial businesses have found it good policy.

Darth_Algar's avatar

For all the ranting and screaming about the “war on Christmas”, the only time the celebration of Christmas was banned in America it was, ironically, Christians who banned it.

JLeslie's avatar

@Yellowdog So, you think there was a rejection of saying Merry Christmas and Trump fixed it? It never existed. People in NYC stores probably still say Happy Holidays and people in Alabama probably still say Merry Christmas. No one was ever upset about Merry Christmas, it was made up by right wing instigators.

SEKA's avatar

I was talking to a trump supporter friend of mine today and she was saying that the dems created a fake pandemic just so they could cancel Christmas this year and try to make trump look bad. I assured her that the dems canceling Christmas wasn’t what made trump look bad

Nomore_lockout's avatar

@SEKA Humor me, tell me there aren’t really people in this world who are stupid enough to believe that shit. That’s a joke post, right?

Yellowdog's avatar

@SEKA Trump has been on the corona virus for about a year, and commissioned a vaccine (at least two by now) that were available in less than nine months. The Dems were denying Covid until February. I call bullshit.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Yes @Yellowdog, we all know you live ensconced in your own little alternate reality.

SEKA's avatar

@Nomore_lockout I would love to tell you that this is a joke; but, sadly it wa a real convo I was caught up in. She’s so far up trump’s ass that she makes @Yellowdog look like an extreme leftie

@Yellowdog It was also trump that suggested that we all shoot up bleach in order to rid ourselves of the virus. The vaccines were ready in 9 months because they were also a possible cure for another illness and trump lucked out that they could also be modified to work with covid. FYI Phizer and Moderna were already working on the vaccine even before trump started saying he was demanding a vaccine “before election day” and not because we “needed a cure”. If you pay attention he still won’t take it himself, so what is he hiding? You spew forth so much bullshit that you think you’re an expert on the subject.

janbb's avatar

Also, Pfizer was pretty clear they didn’t take any government money for the development.

JLeslie's avatar

From where I sit Trump has always supported the vaccine research. The US started work on vaccines days after receiving the genetic sequence. I don’t think I have ever heard Trump speak negatively about the vaccines, and he readily said he would take the vaccine when it was ready or when advised to by the experts. He said it months ago more than once. Is it tragic to give one inch to something that Trump maybe did something right?

What if we played that message over and over and over again. Trump saying he would take the vaccine, taking credit for helping to fund the vaccines? Would the Trumpers who are on the fence or reluctant take the damned vaccine? Do we care about the greater or good or not? He is leaving office, time to focus on America and not politics. The media can propagate whatever message they want with Trump, because he is the king of double speak.

I also don’t feel Trump was telling people to drink or inject bleach, I think he was saying maybe there is a topical way to destroy the virus. Not that I approve of his remarks being said on national TV that way, it was irresponsible to say such a thing, but for sure the Democrats went bat shit crazy when not really necessary.

@SEKA What exactly did they mean cancel Christmas? Cancel people’s ability to gather together? As far as I know Santa still made his deliveries, I saw a Santa tracker website.

SEKA's avatar

@JLeslie I think that she was upset because her family chose to celebrate their Christmas over zoom instead of in person. In her mind it meant that her Christmas had been canceled. To me, it meant that she was looking hard to find a reason to be mad at the dems.

I’d love to see your source of trump saying that he’d take the vaccine. I must have missed that one. I’ve been trying to find it for weeks since you made the same claim on another thread. I’ve seen Pence take it, Mother Pence took it, Fauci took it, Biden took it; but I haven’t seen trump roll up his sleeve yet. I’d love to see all his base take it, but I don’t think even standing in line behind him would get them near that needle

JLeslie's avatar

@SEKA I’ll search for the video, I’m not in a place I can listen to audio right now. This was before he had covid. As far as I’m concerned people who have had covid should be last in line. Exception for healthcare workers who maybe we can argue they should be extra sure they are protected. If Trump chooses not to take the vaccine at this point I don’t think it’s some sort of newsmaker unless Democrats try to turn it into one.

Your friend didn’t have to zoom. She chose to zoom.

SEKA's avatar

Actually, she didn’t choose to zoom as she was given no alternative by her daughter. She threatened to show up at her daughter’s home and her daughter said she wouldn’t let her in. Her daughter tried to explain that it was for her own safety and because she wanted her to be here for next Christmas, but this woman feels cheated. I can see and understand both sides.

Both my parents died years ago and my MIL died a few years back, so it’s just the 3 of us for any holiday. I’m so thankful that I’m not having to explain any of this to my parents because they wouldn’t understand either

JLeslie's avatar

@SEKA I see. That makes sense.

I tried to google and I’m not sure how to efficiently find where a reporter asks the president if he will take the vaccine. I read through some White House transcripts that came up and tried to search youtube. I heard it during a press conference, it was a question from the press.

I just skimmed two transcripts that came up when I googled and the President consistently promotes the vaccine. Here’s the two:

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-vaccine-development/

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-press-briefing-september-16-2020/

The more recent one is when the media tried to say the president was disagreeing with the CDC when they testified, the president just says I think he misunderstood the question. Trump doesn’t try to make the CDC Director (is he the director I’m forgetting) look bad, just calmly said I think he misunderstood. The press won’t have it. In the end Trump was basically right about the timing and efficacy.

Trump says all sorts of things that make me angry and that I disagree with, but if we care about getting the population vaccinated let’s act like it and do whatever it takes, while still holding to the truth, to reassure people the vaccine is effective and safe. The truth is Trump has always promoted the hopes for the vaccine and spoken highly of the researchers at Pfizer and Moderna and JnJ for that matter.

I think a big problem is a lot of people just watch cable news or read an article, and don’t actually listen to press conferences in full. They just see or hear or watch an edited clip or quote. I’m not accusing you of that, and I don’t sit through every news conference myself, but I sit through a lot of them rather than hours of MSNBC, CNN, or Fox. It’s very different to actually watch the press conferences in full. I make the same argument about my governor DeSantis. The press basically helped to kill people in my state in my opinion.
