Social Question

The thing that is undeniable concerning covid is that things are going to continue to decline for quite some time. Do you think $600 is the best the government can do toward easing the suffering?

Asked by stanleybmanly (24153points) January 1st, 2021 from iPhone

Will the “dole” be repeated, or increased? And if so, is it smart or necessary?

No it’s not the best they could so.
I bet Biden makes it up to.us and gives us all a MILLION DOLLARS!!

stanleybmanly's avatar

Well that may be a happy thought, until you understand that the first person to receive that money must spend every dime of it within hours. Anyone receiving that same million dollars one day later would find a happy meal at McDonald’s commanding a price of 40 thousand dollars.

Of course it’s not the best they can do. Look at how Canada has handled it.

But really, so what? Our opinion holds little sway here.

The crazy wulf doesn’t believe that.

Biden urged the House Democrats to take the $600 as a down payment on better plans in the future.

Of course it is not the best the government can do. And whatever Biden does will be disparaged.

I think Biden should goose the economy FDR-style . Give us a new WPA, a new TVA, a New New Deal.

$600 is less than one month’s rent for liveable apartment, and barely enough to pay for heat & buy groceries for a family of three.

For over half the country it’s not about “stimualting” anything – It’s about survival.

I got our deposits today. I agree with @JLoon. It doesnt pay for shit.

$600 isn’t much, I appreciate it.

$2000+ per month for everyone from March 2020 to the end of the pandemic is the minimum that should have been. Anyone in power that advocated for less or didn’t push for this has no business being in power and should have their neck measured for the guillotine.

NO, it’s NOT the best that they CAN…sadly it’s the best that they are going to do, NO matter what Biden tries to do,I can see McConnell blocking ALL efforts. That is WHY I’m going to be a leftie during the Georgia primary runoff!!!

Trump insisted on 2k. I thought Pelosi was going to wet herself.
Then sonofabitch Mitch had to act like it was coming from his bank account.
At every opportunity, Bernie folded like a paper napkin.
“I’m going to FILIBUSTER!”
Shut up Bernie. We are on to you and your high speed reverse.

I am looking forward to the top secret declassification.

There is still a chance to pass the 2k, but a very slim chance.

I received my $600 last week. I heard a rumor that Biden is calling it a down payment. I haven’t seen anything verifying this. I did hear Mitch say that IF it’s the last thing that he does, that’s he’s going to block anything larger tha the $600, plus he’s going to cancel Medicaid, Medicare, & Social Security. I still think that we need to get EVERY member of the House or Senate OFF their current, cozy insurance plan & put straight onto SS/Medicare so that they’ll have a reason to care!!!

Don’t believe every thing you hear @LadyMarissa.

I heard a rumor that Biden is calling it a down payment.

I don’t know if that is a quote, but that is how I heard Biden’s advice described – he wanted the House Democrats to go with the smaller package which was guaranteed to clear the Senate. Then they could work on more after January 20th.

But he and the House can’t do it alone. It’s a hope, not a promise.

Regarding cancelling Medicaid, Medicare, & Social Security, very few Republicans would endorse that. I very much doubt any Senator has said that. Few House Republicans are even that extreme.

I saw the words come out of Mitch’s mouth. This LA Times article appears to be from the same news report that I saw. It seems that several other rep senators are joining him. The reps have been trying to do this ALL my adult life, but have NEVER been able to pull it off. Any time I mention it to my rep friends, they always poo-poo it as well. When the reps finally succeed, there’s going to be a LOT of hungry old people living on the streets!!!

@LadyMarissa: I’m not in favor of privatizing social security, but to be fair, the article talks about privatizing funds for young people, not taking Social Security away from the elderly.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@jca2 To be fair, Mitch said with his own mouth “If it’s the last thing that I ever do, I’m going to kill entitlements like Medicaid, Medicare, & Social Security.” He didn’t stutter or stumble around for the words. Hell, Mitch is older than me, so he doesn’t have much time left to fuck over the old people!!!

jca2's avatar

@LadyMarissa: I googled for that quote and can’t find it. I don’t see anything showing Mitch McConnell made that comment. If you have a link, please post it. I’m not standing up for McConnell, just like to see direct proof before I get excited about things that may not be true.

Dutchess_III's avatar

What @jca2 said. I can’t find anything either.

@LadyMarissa: I also think it’s unlikely that a politician will say something so extreme. Usually they’re a little softer with their rhetoric.
