Is there a silver lining to the Trump riots at the Capitol?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33550points) January 6th, 2021

I think there is. We now know, and have it proven, who the real enemies of America are.

Not blacks, not Hispanics, not Muslims, not Asians, not Iranians, not South American immigrants.

Have we now identified white Trump supporters as America’s real enemies?

And THIS is how this “president” responded to it.
To paraphrase:
“I know the election was stolen, but go home now, pwetty pwease? You are all special and we love you! Btw, the election was stolen!”

janbb's avatar

I think it might have the effect of calling out his Republican enablers in Congress and they might stop their obstructing of the ratification of the Electoral College vote. But then I can be a bit of a Pollyanna at times.

And maybe it’s time for the 25th Amendment to be invoked.

CNN Business – Jan 6, 2021 – Business leaders suggest removing Trump from office to preserve democracy

“The National Association of Manufacturers, the nation’s largest manufacturing association, called on Vice President Mike Pence Wednesday to consider removing President Trump from office.

“Pence “should seriously consider working with the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to preserve democracy,” NAM CEO Jay Timmons said in a statement.”

JLeslie's avatar

No!

Proven what to who? Republicans are already thinking these are Democrats trying to make it look like Republicans are responsible for all of the mayhem.

This is a horrible day in our country. I keep wondering if I am supposed to try to move to another country.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

No it is called:

Sedition is a serious felony punishable by fines and up to 20 years in prison and it refers to the act of inciting revolt or violence against a lawful authority with the goal of destroying or overthrowing it. ”

mazingerz88's avatar

No one has been shot dead yet right?

If that’s the case it’s really impressive so far the discipline and composure of armed Capitol Hill security forces trying to repel a bunch of idiotic Trump fans. I wonder what Trump would do if a good number of people ends up dead because of this shit show Trump produced.

kritiper's avatar

Yes. The TV coverage helps to identify the rioters/troublemakers/traitors/vandals.

Strauss's avatar

Trump and Giuliani should be charged with incitement and sedition.

LuckyGuy's avatar

We now know the true enemies of democracy.

I hope the government facial recognition software identifies every one of those pieces of garbage.

i wonder how many of them were armed. The old ACT Concealed Weapons Detection system has a record now.

chyna's avatar

@JLeslie I have been watching this all day and on different channels. You are the only one I have heard say that republicans think the rioters are democrats. Where did you hear that?

JLeslie's avatar

On my recent facebook thread. Are you still my facebook friend, you can see it.

chyna's avatar

@janbb I agree with the 25th amendment. How long would that take?

janbb's avatar

@chyna I don’t know but I think the Vice-President and all the members of the Cabinet have to agree or initiate it so it’s pretty unlikely.

JLeslie's avatar

@chyna Are you surprised some Republicans want to believe it’s Democrats trying to make Republicans look bad?

That’s their tactics, the WS did it sending in rioters to the BLM protests trying to say BLM is breaking windows and looting. If they’ll do it of course they think the Democrats will do it.

LuckyGuy's avatar

I just saw some scenes of the debacle. Maybe I missed one but I don’t recall seeing a Black or a Mexican in the group. Did you? Who are the enemies of the State now?

By the way, I liked the pics of the terrorists taking selfies in the Capitol building. I hope those are used as evidence in their trials.

jca2's avatar

@LuckyGuy: I think the whole thing was one big selfie extravaganza. Photo ops all around. Everyone was walking around with their cameras out.

The guy who was at Pelosi’s desk is probably going to print and frame that photo and in 20 years, he’ll still be talking about his 15 minutes of fame.

JLeslie's avatar

@LuckyGuy My husband said the same thing! He didn’t say Mexicans, but same idea. He said no Black people in the group.

JLeslie's avatar

Put them all in Guantanamo and let them rot.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@jca2 Hopefully he spends those 20 years in prison. He’ll get to learn about Blacks and Mexicans there.

@JLeslie I’m willing to bet not one person from the dreaded migrant caravan participated in this outrage.

chyna's avatar

And no masks. Covid being passed around.

chyna's avatar

@JLeslie I’m not surprised, I just hadn’t heard that, yet. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

JLeslie's avatar

@chyna I totally forgot about that the last few hours. Has congress received their first vaccination yet?

stanleybmanly's avatar

I suppose that we must accept that while wrecking the capitol, they are distracted from other forms of protest—bombing churches, and burning crosses.

chyna's avatar

@JLeslie I haven’t heard. I hope so.

JLeslie's avatar

My mom just said a lot of people were wearing masks. The QAnons have been saying the masks make people unidentifiable. Ugh.

jca2's avatar

The yahoos that were running around inside the Capitol were mostly not wearing masks.

JLeslie's avatar

@jca2 Ok thanks.

JLeslie's avatar

A friend just send me photos of what’s circulating. Messaging across Facebook basically saying it had to be Democrats how else would people be able to storm the Capitol and get through. Pictures of people who aren’t “white” waving Trump flags in the Capitol. Must be going across Parler and those other platforms en masse.

janbb's avatar

@JLeslie One really has to wonder why all these people are still your friends?

JLeslie's avatar

@janbb The friend who sent me that voted for Biden, is horrified by these Republican senators objecting. She’s a real friend of mine.

The friend who first suggested maybe it was Democrats is a Facebook friend who I do know in real life, but I’m not really a friend, just someone I know.

I don’t cut people off just because they are Republicans. I did stop associating with my friend who is QAnon. I didn’t block her but stopped seeing her posts and won’t visit with her or go near here or responded to her messages anymore.

So many Democrats are completely clueless to how Republicans think, that’s a problem. Hard to fight people when you have no understanding of how they think. Democrats too often play into their hands. Like that word socialism for instance.

janbb's avatar

@JLeslie Got it. I just hate hearing this crap.

JLeslie's avatar

Which crap? Their craziness made up garbage?

YARNLADY's avatar

@mazingerz88 One person was shot dead. I believe the police wanted a violent riot so they could freely kill off the instigators, and Potus wanted it so he could scream about killing his unarmed supporters. Neither happened.

Strauss's avatar

I just heard there were four fatalities, the shooting mentioned above by @YARNLADY, and three others that may have been more mundane medical emergencies. (if you can call any death mundane)

JLeslie's avatar

I heard two deaths. I heard the police were taking selfies with the rioters.

jca2's avatar

I saw four fatalities in a headline today.

JLeslie's avatar

Did you know who it was? Late last night I saw 4, and 3 were listed as medical emergencies.

gondwanalon's avatar

That madness helps those on the left. It hurts those on the right.

cookieman's avatar

There are four reported deaths. A female domestic terrorist was shot in the chest by a Capital Police Officer and later died.

The other three, also domestic terrorists, died of “medical emergencies”.

janbb's avatar

@cookieman I read that one of the four died after tasing himself, two of heart attacks and the one terrorist who was killed.

elbanditoroso's avatar

The person who tased himself – that’s a hoot. It must have been an electrifying experience.

And people like that are allowed to own weapons?

cookieman's avatar

@janbb: Just read this about the woman who was shot.

“The woman was 35-year-old Ashli Babbitt, a California native and Air Force veteran, her former husband told The Washington Post. Before her death in the Capitol, she had used her social media to express fervent support for President Donald Trump and echo many of the president’s conspiracy theories and false claims of mass voter fraud.”

https://www.boston.com/news/national-news/2021/01/07/ashli-babbitt

elbanditoroso's avatar

My thoughts and prayers to the dead terrorist.

JLeslie's avatar

Video of woman being shot. Hard to make out. If this is the correct video she is shot in her back. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AWMpTHLJXbw

LostInParadise's avatar

I am hoping that many of those who voted for Trump will be as outraged as the rest of us and reconsider their support.

jca2's avatar

Looking at the video provided by @JLeslie, I don’t know why what she did was any worse than what some of the others did. I saw on the news yesterday some guy breaking a window with a crowbar, and other things like that. I’m not excusing the woman’s actions, I’m just saying it was no worse than some other actions people took where they were not shot.

JLeslie's avatar

@jca2 It looked like she was climbing up. I need to watch it on my TV, I’m on my little phone.

jca2's avatar

@JLeslie: Yeah I saw she was climbing up. That was no different than people who broke windows and climbed in. I wasn’t there, of course, so playing armchair quarterback, but I don’t see what she did was worthy of getting shot, any more or less what others did.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

She was the first rioter entering that hall where the Capitol police were holding the line.

chyna's avatar

It appears to me she is shot in the chest.

Demosthenes's avatar

Already hearing from right-wingers that these protests were an Antifa false flag.

Not at all surprising coming from a group that labels anything they don’t like a conspiracy.

kritiper's avatar

I heard she was shot in the neck.

jca2's avatar

On the news, they said chest.

janbb's avatar

I kind of fail to see why it matters where she was shot.

jca2's avatar

@janbb: Looking at the comments, I see the first one about where she was shot was from @JLeslie, who indicated “shot in the back.” If that’s the case, she was probably not a threat to someone if she was shot in the back. I may be incorrect, and again, playing Armchair Quarterback it’s hard to second guess anything, but that’s my assumption.

JLeslie's avatar

No, @cookieman mentioned the chest above my comment. It’s the only reason I mentioned it. I really don’t care where she was shot, but like @jca2 said usually in the back would be not a direct threat, but if they are trying to enter the next hall they are a threat to the congressmen. Also, I was thinking about the potential for it to be used by Republicans if it’s her back, but like I said I don’t care if she was shot and I don’t care where she was shot and I hope they can change her service record to dishonorably discharged. If you all see her facing the bullet and getting hit in the chest I just couldn’t see it well.

filmfann's avatar

Sadly, yes.
It may result in the 25th Amendment being used to remove Trump from office, which could happen before he had the chance to pardon himself, his family, and his minions (and maybe those who invaded the Capitol.)

stanleybmanly's avatar

They must be convicted before pardoned.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

Nixon was not convicted or even indicted before he was pardon. I believe Bush Sr. also gave pre-emptive pardons to Iran-Contra criminals.

elbanditoroso's avatar

I have no sympathy for the dead woman. As a veteran, she knew better than to do what she was doing. Terrorising the capitol was against her oath.

Zero sympathy from me.

mazingerz88's avatar

No life, not even one is worth losing over the idiocy of one reality TV show host. Heartbreaking that people actually ended up dead over a sociopathic douchebag.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Too often I share the same exasperation for these misguided souls. But a part of me recognizes that these people are desperate, and worse, their anger is directed at the right place, but for the wrong and most flawed of reasons.

jca2's avatar

@JLeslie: Once a veteran is discharged, their discharge status can’t be changed. I just googled it.

SEKA's avatar

The veteran who was shot was just recently remarried. Her new husband chose to not make the trip with her. According to her new MIL, she was a QAnon supporter who was prepared to do whatever was necessary to make sure that trump wasn’t denied his rightful office. She came simply to “Stop the Steal”. She survived 3 tours of duty in the Middle East only to come home to make a choice to be shot down as a terrorist. Her MIL said that no one had contacted her nor her son as to her death. They learned of her dying from watching her being shot on the news.

@ elbanditoroso Yes I see a silver lining. In my mind, it’s definitive proof that Donald J Trump is anti-American. Plus, it shut down many of his blind supporters (like Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and the rest) from denying Biden his duly elected office. Those who would have fought to their grave, shut up and agreed. Even trump himself has conceded his loss and that is worth a gazillion dollars in my book

Pandora's avatar

I think it knocked the shine off for some of his supporters that just hung on to him because he was a republican. They got to see what his real agenda was for America. A coup and for him to be placed on the Throne as King or dictator.
Of course, they are all pretending to be surprised as if this sprung up out of nowhere and as if he was suddenly mentally unfit even though anyone with 2 working eyes and a brain saw that back in 2015.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

Ted Cruz voted to reject the electoral count AFTER the rioting. So did a MAJORITY of House Republicans.

They should all be expelled.

Senators who voted to overturn the election:
Josh Hawley – Missouri
Ted Cruz – Texas
Tommy Tuberville – Alabama
Cindy Hyde-Smith – Mississippi
Roger Marshall -Kansas
John Kennedy – Louisiana
Cynthia Lummis – Wyoming
Rick Scott – Florida

JLeslie's avatar

Please get Rick Scott out of the senate for me down here in Florida. Actually, for the nation. He introduced a horrible bill at the federal level back in September I think that basically said 24 hours after Election Day all COUNTING must stop. Any ballot not yet counted is void. Total fuckhead.

I guess one silver lining is I see more and more Republicans denouncing Trump after this extreme action. I still prefer not to get to this point this way.

Reminds me of King going to Selma because he knew the cops there would likely be physically violent.

stanleybmanly's avatar

The silver lining is of course the reduction of the Republican brand to the thalidomide of politics. It is the spectacular obliteration of that party’s tenuous hold on any claim to ethical legitimacy.

hello321's avatar

@stanleybmanly: “The silver lining is of course the reduction of the Republican brand to the thalidomide of politics. It is the spectacular obliteration of that party’s tenuous hold on any claim to ethical legitimacy.”

This is the perpetual prediction that never comes true. The “ahhh, now this will reduce Republican power!” line never bears fruit. Whether it’s Bush intentionally lying to kill 500k to 1mil people in the middle east, or the rise of the Tea Party and the election of Trump. The unfortunate truth is that one of the corporate parties has the passion, and it isn’t the Democrats.

ragingloli's avatar

The only way this might diminish the republican’s popularity, is if drumpf creates his own party, and takes a substantial number of cultists with him.

stanleybmanly's avatar

While I won’t argue the Democratic aroma anybody’s idea of “uplifting”, there is nothing short of monumental in the transfer of Georgia to the Democratic column. The Democrats, like Putin owe the fool more than is estimable, and almost certainly could not have done it without him. Think what you want, but I believe Trump far surpasses Nixon as the wart the Republicans won’t live down. He is the gift to Democrats that will keep on giving when your grandchildren are voting.

janbb's avatar

Thinking about this over the past few days, the biggest silver lining is that it happened two weeks before Inauguration Day. It is hard to believe that security on that day won’t be iron-clad and Biden and Harris won’t be thoroughly protected. I’m sure plans are being revised even now for how it will be conducted.

Demosthenes's avatar

There is a “million militia march” prepared for the day after inauguration. So I don’t think we’ve seen the last of the violence in DC.

janbb's avatar

@Demosthenes What I’m saying is not that we’ve seen the last but that there will be proper protections in place next time. At least, let’s hope!

And it’s also quite possible they won’t get a permit.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

The inauguration tantrum could be an opportunity to corral them and arrest everyone whose cell phone was active at the Capitol on Tuesday.

JLeslie's avatar

@Call_Me_Jay That would be great. I want them all in jail. I want to see the trials. I never watch trials on TV, but that I would watch. Ironically, my QANON friend (she was my friend until she went off the cliff) was posting a few months ago there will be trials like Nuremberg.
