If you could afford any type of living situation, what would you choose for yourself and your needs?

Asked by jca2 (16892points) January 6th, 2021

I met a couple a few years ago, at a resort, who told me they were building houses on their property for their adult children (and the grandchildren), so they could all have their privacy yet would be close in proximity. To me, if everyone gets along, that sounds ideal.

When I’ve driven around with a friend whose hobby is real estate, I’ve thought that if I had a big house where everyone had their own space, it might be nice to have a few roommates. An option would be the big compound like the couple was building, where everyone has their own house on one large piece of land. In both situations, everyone could have their privacy if they wanted, or eat together if they wanted.

What, to you, would be an ideal living situation, assuming money were not an obstacle?

Lots of fun ideas too many to mention. Will just do one. A house based on my own design with a grand and cavernous kitchen, lots of stoves, ovens, pantries, wall of loaded freezers, retractable roof, a ridiculously long wooden table and benches for family, friends and strangers…all 40 or 50 of them. Great cooking, eating and drinking every Saturday. Lol

Main house with 4 bedroom a large great room and a casual dining room. The master far from the great room and kitchen. Attached 3 car garage.

Guest house part of an unattached garage. I’d use the guest house as a zumba and exercise room until I had a long term guest like my in-laws living with us.

Lap pool about 10×50 ft.

That’s describing a house that within reason I could probably afford and wouldn’t be massive. If I went really into no price too high, I would have a totally separate guest and the room that’s part of the garage would be designated for zumba and a cave room space for my husband. Plus, we would have land for a karting track lol.

I would like a farm with room for a couple of elephants. I would make an arrangement with a college or university to use the land for teaching ag students.

The house where my wife and I live is pretty cool. It is boarded by forest park on 3 sides (very quite and private). Have a half acre of land, 3 bedrooms 2½ baths, a 23’ x 18’ reck room with an Endless Pool and a 3 car garage. All paid off and no debt. We regularly and often walk out our back door and go onto deer trails to main hiking trails that go on for over 9 miles. There’s free local access to nearby Puget Sound, lakes and rivers where we paddle outrigger canoes 4 to 5 days a week all year round. We have 6 canoes and 2 Hobie Cat sailboats. We only sail on nice summer like days. We love it here. It’s like Shangri-La.

This is a great question. I want to think about it a bit before I answer. I have thought about this many times, and I would like to try to jot down some of my ideas. Right now, I’m still reeling with the horrifying events of today (1/6/2021). I’ll be back.

Big houses come with their own issues, most of which those envious of them rarely appreciate. The big one I actually realized but neglected til it happened is that regardless of the size of the house, for some mysterious reason, every room or cubby, is ALWAYS on its way to being crowded up with “stuff”. And the bigger the place, the longer you allow yourself to ignore the problem. Worse is the fact that if you regiment yourself toward pristine management of your space, the pressure will be next to irresistible from those multitudes frantic at the discovery of unoccupied rooms, garage, attic, closet etc. space. Even a furnished room with a bed in it is no defense without visible proof that the bed is to be occupied. I never realized just how profound a truth this is prior to the blissful boredom of covid.

I have thought about this ever since the small houses became popular.

I would like half a dozen small houses on an acre of land, all connected with covered walkways to a main building that serves as a “great room” with a kitchen/eating area in one corner, a general gathering place family room, a study, a library, and an office. The small houses would essentially be bedroom suites.

I want a multi family condo on the beach, free and clear, to house at least 6 of my extended family members.

@YARNLADY I love that idea. I talk about an island, village, condo, or commune for my family and friends.

I want to live a good distance away from other people, in the woods. I want a small little house with a waterfall near it. I also want a huge garden.

Just enough room in the house for one person. I plan on being alone.
