Did anyone besides me stay tuned right to the end of the congressional session last night to hear VP Pence declare Biden duly elected?

Asked by Jeruba (56106points) January 7th, 2021

I listened for hours to the formula being repeated for each state and waited out the long interval of the Pennsylvania objection debate. I heard Pence announce the final (unchanged) tally and confirm the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

By then it was nearly 1:00 a.m. my time, and three hours later for the folks on the East Coast (including the ones in the Capitol building).

I wanted to hear it for myself as it happened, bearing witness in some small way to the shaken but surviving continuity of our government.

And I would like to see the 25th Amendment invoked today.

How can anyone believe that the insurrection riots of January 6th were incited by left-wing phonies when the president thanked them and said he loved them and knows how they feel? That was all his!

Did you stick around for it to play out last night?

No, I gave up at around midnight (Eastern).

And yes, the 25h Amendment should be invoked but I doubt either party wants the fight.

I went to bed. It’s not as if my watching would change anything. I feel the same way about debates, State of the Union speeches, and election nights. I would rather read the news the next day. The words matters to me, not the spectacle.

I didn’t.

A close friend of mine tried, she really wanted to, but fell asleep around 3:00 EST. If I had to guess she wanted to stay up because she was paranoid it wouldn’t happen.

I didn’t, but I was encouraged that even before the rioters had been cleared from the Capitol the members of Congress fully grasped the importance of returning that very day and finishing the certification.

I wasn’t interested in the spectacle, either, @Call_Me_Jay. Rather, I felt that, even if only symbolically, I was supporting the process; and I wanted to see it for myself in real time. The invocation of the ritual itself has meaning, including the formal language of it.

For me, it was a little bit like how I feel when I travel by air: if I don’t hold on tight, the plane might crash.

I almost never do such thing, but yes, I stayed up. I wasn’t watching video, just The Guardian’s live text bulletin updates.
