In the classic movie Oliver why did the king have objections to democracy?

Especially basket weavers? What would be a logical comeback that supports democracy that includes basket weavers?

Without any evidence, he claimed that the elections would be rigged, foreigners from other kingdoms would be voting, and all votes for him would be thrown in a trumpster. ;-)
