One has 7 letters, the other has 6. Then there’s “weenie”. I can remember as a boy of 4 when the entire neighborhood of little kids would play our favorite game. The star of the game was this very sweet little dachshund that loved the fun as much as us. The game? Hide from the weenie dog. And if the weenie dog found you, it became run from the weenie dog. His name was shorty and if he could catch and lick you, you were out. It was wonderful—too wonderful. Stuffy adults would tolerate only so much from a block of squealing kids. There were occasions when people (no one would admit to it) actually summoned the cops. I actually believe one of the jokes of the local station was to send the rookies or those unfamiliar with Shorty to answer the shrieking kids complaints.

The former is a sexually attractive canine, the latter a slang term for a penis that goes into the former.
A hot dog is a sausage in a hot dog bun.

Isn’t a ‘hot dog’ the split bun sandwich with a sausage in it?

And a sausage is the long cylindrical thing made with meat.

Loli, you disgusting pervert, you crack me up. It’s clear YOUR childhood was one phenomenal
twisted experience. Congratulations!

@ragingloli – I sense a hidden meaning here…

Hidden? There’s nothing about our dedicated monument to bad taste which should be considered hidden. Loli pushes IT right into your face. Just you wait.

Surely by now everyone knows about the furry subculture.

We forget about your “authority” on the topic. I’ve never enjoyed it more than trying to visualize what could possibly make you tick. You’re another one concealing a top notch mind from public display. But fur on the ROCK?

A hot dog is a type of sausage. Link

kritiper's avatar

A hot dog is the sandwich the sausage goes into.

doyendroll's avatar

There’s no difference they should both be sniffed at.

A Hot Dog is NOT a sandwich!

Geez, what a bunch of heathens.

ragingloli's avatar

It is a Taco.

kritiper's avatar

Of course a hot dog is not a sandwich. It’s a hot dog.
But for ease of making my meaning clear, I said it was a sandwich, which has a filling, like meat, between two pieces of bread, which a hot dog is.
What do you call a hot dog that has ketchup on it?? BLASPHEMY!

Zaku's avatar

@kritiper Is right – it’s the type of sausage. You can put a bratwurst or a kielbasa or a breakfast sausage in a bun and it won’t become a hot dog.

e.g. see: http://randredhots.com/hot-dog-kielbasa-bratwurst-italian-sausage-whats-difference/

zenvelo's avatar

These are not hot dogs

They are made with cocktail wieners.

Hot dog is a type of sausage. My husband calls it sausage and I correct him, or ask him to clarify, even though it is a sausage. If he tells me to buy sausage at the supermarket, I need to know what kind.

Americans call that type of sausage a hot dog. I grew up in New York calling it a frankfurter.

All other sausages are called sausage and sometimes further defined as well: bratwurst (brats), Italian sausage, kielbasa, etc.

kritiper's avatar

I checked my dictionary for explanations of what a hot dog was vs. a sausage. What does yours say??

ragingloli's avatar

For “Hotdog” it says “in ein aufgeschnittenes Brötchen gelegtes heißes Würstchen mit Ketchup oder Senf”

JLeslie's avatar

Hot dog history, both the type of sausage and the name. https://www.hot-dog.org/culture/hot-dog-history

@ragingloli It’s a hot dog (in America) whether on a bun or not. I often eat mine with rice.

ragingloli's avatar

My definition clearly states that a hotdog is the whole assembly, not just the sausage.

ragingloli's avatar

It is like saying that a hamburger is just the patty.

JLeslie's avatar

I know what your definition said, I’m telling you how the word is commonly used.

On packaging when you buy them they do say, franks, frankfurters, sausages, but most people call them hotdogs even when referring to a package of them. Shopping lists say hot dogs and hot dog buns, not sausages and hot dog buns.

ragingloli's avatar

How angry would you be, if you ordered a bucket of chicken wings, and all you got was a bucket of bones?

JLeslie's avatar

@ragingloli Ordering one is different. Then there is an assumption it will be on a bun.

ragingloli's avatar

Deep in your heart you know that a hotdog is the whole thing.
Repent now, and your sould may yet be saved from the beer volcano.

zenvelo's avatar

All hot dogs are sausages.

Not all sausages are hot dogs.

@ragingloli I understand your frustration. My MIL won’t call Salmon fish. There is Salmon and then there is fish.
