How can people still be so excited about Sarah Palin?

Asked by syz (36034points) September 8th, 2008

…when she’s openly lying? She said today that she told Congress “thanks, but no thanks” to the bridge to nowhere program when her record, in black and white, shows that she was a strong supporter of that pork until it got scrapped, and only then did she change her opinion. AND STILL KEPT THE MONEY! As much as I’d like to be excited about a woman on the ticket, I really don’t get it.

(And don’t even get me started on the hypocrisy of being “proud of her daughter for making the right choice” about the baby when she wants to legislate away the right of everyone else’s daughter to even make a choice – even in cases of rape and incest.)

Ignorance? Stupidity? C, all of the Above.

sarah palin is attractive and she seems to talk tough. i swear she is “wonder woman” who, when we are not looking, takes off her glasses, lets her hair down and flies around in a one-piece red white and blue superhero costume. but she doesn’t change my mind or sway me. nice move by john to get her on the ticket, but voters must continue to be wise and read between the lines. “wonder woman” for president? nah.

I’m insensed at this Palin distraction, and I’m shitting my paints that we are going to loose another election based on distraction, personality, and election fraud.

Yesterday I asked about faith and ignorance and someone wrote that they were ignorant and happy about it—jesus is going to sort everything out after she votes for McCain——I’m going (gone) nuts watching the cable news channel.

Revolution time, number 9, number 9, number 9….......

She’s pretty, a good speaker, and a woman. Not to mention that if the republicans win the election, she’ll be the first woman president when McCain dies of old age.

How can peolpe be excited about Obama? He has done nothing since being in the US Senate….

shilolo's avatar

Let’s be honest, neither has McCain. His biggest accomplishments, such as the McCain-Feingold Act and supporting immigration reform, he has since repudiated.

bodyhead's avatar

@vectorul, that’s a different question. You’re trolling this thread.

syz's avatar

@vectorul Oh, never fear, I’m not excited about anyone. As always, my vote is for the least-worst. But what kind of idiots chant about drilling and deify an overt liar? I’m certainly willing to admit that you can’t believe everything that you read or are told, but there seems to be some pretty transparent issues.

marinelife's avatar

@vectorul It is completely wrong to say that Obama has done nothing since he was in the Senate. Here are just a few of his accomplishments. Just because ignorant people keeping repeating that lie does not make it so.

First legislation, the HOPE Act, which increased Pell Grants to $5100, and later joined Senator Kennedy on the Higher Education legislation that passed July 20, by a vote of 78–18. That legislation also included funding for Predominantly Black Colleges to assist with counseling, tutoring and other needs of low income students. It also creates the Teaching Residency Act which will create a school-based teacher preparation program in high needs schools to provide each teacher with a mentor, content instruction, classroom management skills, a master’s degree and state certification, and a 2 year follow-up program.

**The Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006
is an act that requires the full disclosure of all entities or organizations receiving federal funds beginning in fiscal year (FY) 2007 on a website maintained by the Office of Management and Budget.

**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act Authored by U.S. Sens. Dick Lugar (R-IN) and Barack Obama (D-IL), the Lugar-Obama initiative expands U.S. cooperation to destroy conventional weapons. It also expands the State Department’s ability to detect and interdict weapons and materials of mass destruction. Signed into Law on January 11, 2007.

“Obama worked with Russ Feingold (D–WI) to eliminate gifts of travel on corporate jets by lobbyists to members of Congress and require disclosure of bundled campaign contributions under the “Honest Leadership and Open Government Act”, which was signed into law in September 2007.

He joined Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in sponsoring S. 453, a bill to criminalize deceptive practices in federal elections, including fraudulent flyers and automated phone calls, as witnessed in the 2006 midterm elections.

Obama also introduced the “Iraq War De-Escalation Act”, a bill to cap troop levels in Iraq, begin phased redeployment, and remove all combat brigades from Iraq before April 2008.<68>

Later in 2007, Obama sponsored with Kit Bond (R-MO) an amendment to the 2008 Defense Authorization Act adding safeguards for personality disorder military discharges, and calling for a review by the Government Accountability Office following reports that the procedure had been used inappropriately to reduce government costs.

** The “Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act.

The 2007 Government Ethics Bill

Obama’s Global Poverty Act of 2007, passed out of committee just a few days ago
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Barack Obama (D-IL), Chuck Hagel (R-NE), and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Congressman Adam Smith (D-WA) today hailed the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s passage of the Global Poverty Act (S.2433), which requires the President to develop and implement a comprehensive policy to cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015 through aid, trade, debt relief, and coordination with the international community, businesses and NGOs. This legislation was introduced in December.

Here is a good Palin resource.

Also, Shannyn Moore was on the local Air America, and she brought up many new Palin stories that deserve some looking into. http://aardvarkcola.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/alaska-broadcaster-shannon-moore-on-sarah-palin/

I’m excited to dig up some truth on the Palin Alaskans know, and the Palin that the locals know seems far different that what has been presented to.

I would say “the people” aren’t. The media has a vested interest in raising ire and making the race appear to be neck and neck. Her RNC speech raised more $ for Ds than Rs and drove more voter registrations in the same direction.

Likely, “drill baby drill” was orchestrated by the RNC just like those hand painted signs were made en masse by RNC organizers (probably by HS volunteers who where misled by promises of participating in the democratic process) and handed out to true believers as they walked in the door.

syz's avatar

@kevo Thanks, kevbo, as usual you are the voice of reason. I just find myself more and more fearful, the more I see of her. (I was convinced that there was no way in hell that Bush could possibly get re-elected, and look how that turned out.)

You Democrats exaggerate ALL THE TIME!! Every time you post something, it’s blown WAY out of proportion! 100% of the time, you ALWAYS exaggerate!
You never NOT exaggerate.

I have friends that were at the convention for the Palin speech and they, very pro Palin, admitted that the signs were handed out by organizers, not hand-made. There were also little “talking points” “cheat sheets” handed out to delegates and spectators, at least the days there were there. That was to tell you what to say if the media approached you. They also said that Palin t-shirts were outselling McCain shirts by probably 2 to 1, which even they were shaking their heads about. Bottom line, it makes it very difficult to know who or what to believe nowadays.

what constitutes a leader? a leader is one who motivates. whether we agree or disagree with a presidential candidate, a motivator has “genuine” abstract concepts that confound general thought processes. experience or no experience, the energy of a leader is from the heart and not so much “the mind” or his so-called history in war or politics. voters must realize that “flesh” is simply “flesh.” when we realize the message is coming from “the heart” and not from a “face” or “color” or “gender,” then we will vote with our hearts and our intelligence.

susanc's avatar

Syz asked how can people be excited about her, and I know he means how can they like her. But we need to be in an uproar about her because she represents a glimpse of McCain’s mind, or else she represents the groupthink of McCain’s strategizing committee,
and that’s important because if he’s president someday that mindset is going to prevail.

She also (quite honestly) represents a subset of American society that admires spunkiness,
down-homeness, and a certain kind of guts, the kind that doesn’t care if she fucks everything all to shit as long as she can be outspoken and “independent”. Which she enjoys, clearly, the same way Geo. Bush enjoys it. Childishness: we love it here.

There is nothing like the element of surprise. Sarah Palin the Governor for Alaska for a large portion of America was unknown. When Senator John McCain announced to the public that his Vice Presidential nominee was going to be a woman. both Democrats and Republicans were shocked. Governor Palin with her good looks and small town life has brought a lot of sparks not only to the Republican party but to the 2008 election. No matter who wins, this election will be a historical moment. But I think we should look at where Governor Palin stands on issues because that is the most important thing to look at before we cast our vote. Here is some of the views of Governor Palin (a) is against abortion (b) believes marriage should be between a man and a woman (c) believes America should produce its own oil (d) supports Second Amendment/right to bear arms (e) advocate for special needs children. Whether we are a Democrat or Republican we must feel that our vote counts and that our elected officials have our best interest in mind.

all obama is saying is give peace a chance. he too stands for everything GAMBIT just mentioned, but, well, he said it first. the mc cain/palin ticket is desperately trying to bounce off what barack has been saying all along. voters, please get a clue: change is within the heart of a leader, not a leader who just has a heart.

palin is attractive, yes, and so is obama. but obama just happens to be attractive. the mc cain party dug deep to find palin to give “wow factor” to what was a boring party.

ppl seems to be easily amused and choose not to delve into the things she’s actually done/said.
bottom line…ppl are stupid.

allengreen's avatar

She defunded an anti rape program? In the highest per capita rape state?

susanc's avatar

… or she attacked/fired a state functionary she
found annoying, citing the fact that he was soliciting federal funding for anti-rape programs.

I think deaddolly has a point. But we are not the ppl who are stupid, so let’s keep talking.

allengreen's avatar

Hey Deaddolly, what has she done? Please enlighten us..

deaddolly's avatar

It’s the things she’s not done in her own state…check her record. She’s not experienced…
people complain Obama isn’t experienced…personally, I’ll vote for his experienced over hers any day.

glad to hear that….we need all the help we can get….
