Why is the right comparing the riot in the Capital, to last summer's riots in Portland?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23478points) January 12th, 2021

Is it just a Fright wing spin, a distraction?

Because…don’t feed the trolls. Seriously.

If someone attempts to “both sides” BLM/Antifa or describe how they also opposed violence from BLM/Antifa, etc., you’re dealing with a fascist who is not sincerely engaging.

Because a lot of the left completely denied there were riots and looting. That was a mistake, I said that all along. Trump offered to send in National help and a lot of liberals twisted that into Trump trying to create a military zone and stop the protesting. No one should be confusing peaceful protesters with rioters.

It’s hugely different though, because an attack on the Capitol, a branch of our federal government, rises to a completely different level.

Everyone should be against these acts of aggression and violence. Invading the Capitol is a terrorist act in my opinion.

JLeslie's avatar

@hello321 I knew you would say that. Yeah, I’m a fascist. Sure that makes perfect sense.~

hello321's avatar

^ Sorry. That was uncalled for. You are clearly not a fascist. But you’re not a friendly voice when it comes to racial and economic justice. Your critique of political action and rage is not something new. People have been playing this role forever – including in the 60s and speaking out against riots and marches during the civil rights movement.

There is no “neutral” position here, despite your attempt to find one.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@JLeslie You just aren’t a hypocrit. Careful, you may lose your Democrat card. haha!

JLeslie's avatar

@hello321 Ok, sure. Whatever you say. I am a minority, married to a minority and I grew up knowing my people were enslaved, hated, and killed just for existing. Sure sure, I’m clueless.

It’s not about being neutral. I’m not neutral. I’m against violence. You don’t think there were WS and other criminals rioting during BLM? They were creating a distraction from the protests and helping QAnon with the messaging that BLM was violent.

I NEVER spoke out against the marches.

@JLeslie: “You don’t think there were WS and other criminals rioting during BLM? They were creating a distraction from the protests and helping QAnon with the messaging that BLM was violent.”

The violence that occurred during expressions of political rage at the state brutalizing and murdering its citizens was from the cops. All this pearl-clutching about private property and “how it looks” is exactly how things have been framed through history, including the 1960s. It’s always people talking about how they are “hurting their own cause”, etc.

Rather than adopt the framing of fascists and authoritarian thugs, you could be an ally. You could look at economic and racial injustice and help demand change. You could see these riots for what they were, and stop pretending that there is some equivalence here.

The long comments where you express your sympathy with injustice while demanding civility and compliance is not helping. You’re looking to find blame on both sides, rather than evaluate the power structure and help fight against it. Where is your outrage at people being rounded up in the streets and arrested this summer? Where is your outrage at people being shot and blinded, beaten with clubs and gassed? Where is your outrage at cops destroying food distribution and water centers during protests?

Your disgust and outrage is at “violence”. Unfortunately, your framing has allowed you to justify violence by the state and blame the victims. This will only result in more violence, which you claim to be against.

@hello321 I do not condone violence by “the state.” I know a lot of people on the far left and far right who are happy to see what happened at the Capitol. You all just go ahead and be happy about it. I’m out.

All this ^^ is why I hate politics.

Really.

Truly.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@JLoon We’re all the villains in someone’s book. Politics do seem to bring out the worst in some people though, you’re right.

@KNOWITALL -True…but sad.

@JLeslie Just curious on who exactly on the left denied there were riots and looting at those marches?

That shouldn’t be too hard to prove or disprove with so many cellphones out there so it does not make sense that whoever it is on the left you were referring to would make such claims. All I saw on TV were some Democratic politicians not condoning any violent acts in those marches.

I’m pretty sure on Fox News the focus was on the looting not the reason for the marches.

It’s unavoidably suspicious when people zero in on looting etc. when people are marching against police violence. Armed men from out of state show up to protect properties far from where they live. Protect it from angry marchers. Help the local police etc.

It’s obvious racism and an excuse to shoot people they look down to and hate.

That’s what racists do, deflect by pointing out looted stores instead of the reason why people are angrily out on the streets demanding change. A lot of people disagree with these marchers and one effective tactic to undermine them is magnify the looting and property destruction done during the march.

And now it seems these marches are being blamed as one of the causes of Trump’s mob attacking Capitol Hill?

It keeps them from having to face the FACT that 45 is a bad, BAD man!!!
Think that maybe IF he doesn’t immediately leave town that an unmarked van should pull up beside him, throw a hood over his head & toss him into the back of the empty van then ride him around for a while…like ALL the way to Florida???

@mazingerz88 Plenty of my far left friends and relatives didn’t want to hear about looters, wrote “let it burn” when the fires were set in Minneapolis, we had a Q about that here, went crazy that any curfews were put in place, we had a Q about that too. Perceived everything as Trump or the right trying to stop the protests rather than realizing that people could protest all day long, but just wanted the streets free of protesters at night when a looting was more likely.

I certainly don’t agree that BLM marches justify what happened at the Capitol, the Capitol is a whole other level. The BLM marches were justified and good in my opinion, they were needed. Busting into the Capitol Building is not needed, justified, and is a terrorist act in my opinion. They are not the same at all. My problem is people seem unable to admit ever when the other side might have a point. Just because I agree with one aspect of something doesn’t mean I am the enemy and agree with everything the other political side says.

I see how so many people just repeat what cable news says. I know, because I watch the same cable channels. I wrote a Q about my governor putting 65 and older ahead of essential workers and the first two jellies on there wrote how horrible my governor is and a horrible decision. Basically, the Democrat party line. Today I just received a text that the CDC is changing the recommendation to what my governor decided originally. It’s just one of example of many that people just seem to repeat the party line, or have to hate on DeSantis as a knee jerk reaction. I blame the media partly for so much infection here. They never delivered DeSantis’ message accurately. I ‘m getting of topic, but I am sick of it.

Back to the Capitol and BLM. How do you expect Republicans to be willing to listen when Democrats won’t give an inch when Republicans actually are making a reasonable point and vise versa. It’s a stalemate. In my opinion there is absolutely no defense for what happened in The Capitol, like I have said before, I want the trials on TV day after day, and send the ring leaders to Guantanamo. That is my city! It is the nation’s capital, but also I was born in DC, I grew up in the DC suburbs. What is happening there is local news for my parents. I dread the day we can’t freely walk on the national mall and feel safe, visit the Smithsonian and the memorials and monuments, or our congressmen feel coming to work is taking their life in their hands. it is horrible.

Now, we have the Republicans turning on Trump, because it suits them politically. He is out anyway, and they are trying to save the Republican party. I can barely watch any of it anymore.

It is important that we are all convinced that “they” are coming to get you. “They” of course are a matter of convenience. But “they” are so great a threat to “us” that it is understandable that “we” be protected and served through caging their kids or randomly bludgeoning or shooting a few of the “others” now and then. Doesn’t matter if there is no reason to fear or despise them. Clearly, a reason can be provided.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@stanley I agree with that. United we stand, divided we fall. It’s disheartening to witness.

My parents just received their vaccines at Bethesda Naval aka Walter Reed. I know the Capitol buildings are being focused on around the country, but my family and many friends are in government buildings all the time. It’s unthinkable to me to have to worry about our own citizens attacking them. During 9/11 I was calling my dad to make sure my mom was not working in a government building that day. This is insane.

Some people here might not remember that there was rioting in a federal building in Portland.

I was reminded by a Facebook post that Trump tweeted in part that “Anarchists, agitators, or protestors…vandalism or damage…will be prosecuted…minimum ten years in prison…”

It was a courthouse, and I guess possibly Portland wanted to allow protesters to set fire and vandalize or attack it. Maybe they saw it as therapeutic, I don’t know. If it had been MAGA how would you react?

It’s not about comparing the two, it’s about shutting down conversation by accusing the other side of deflecting. Conversations are messy. Politics is messy. Emotions are high and people are being manipulated. Close your eyes when something happens and imagine being on the other side or the other person. Both sides fail at this.

Democrats accused Republicans of not separating protestors from rioters but it seems quite a few Democrats also don’t separate the two. We have jellies defending rioting if it’s for civil rights.

Meanwhile, we have National Guard sleeping on the floor in the Capitol Building.
