If that's actually how it's spelled, I have no idea. However if the correct spelling is "grits", and it's in reference to a food, then this should help.
http://www.grits.com/
Or if you are talking about estate planning, (which Dr. Who probably wasn't),
"A personal-residence grantor retained income trust (GRIT) allows a homeowner to transfer ownership of a residence during his or her lifetime to reduce the estate taxes heirs would have to pay if the residence were held until death. Personal-residence GRITs are helpful in reducing the tax of those who expect their estate to exceed the amount sheltered from estate tax by the unified estate gift tax credit." http://www.nysscpa.org/cpajournal/old/12650281.htm
and it's good with *lots* of butter.
.... and bacon bits. However, some folks like them sweet, not savory. Honey, or cane syrup are common additions.
As a southerner I should probably comment,
Grits are....grits. It's hard to explain. The best answer was probably niomtastic who said corn porridge.
Most northerners who can tolerate grits load them up with sugar or syrup, must southerners (that I know) just like em with some butter, maybe some salt. I personally prefer to mix them up with some scrambled eggs (and bacon before i became veg.)
Grits are awesome. Mostly for breakfast. As stated it is corn ground up and boiled I eat them so many ways but the most common way people eat them is just with butter. I live in south Louisiana so I know. They are good with bacon, eggs, brown or white sugar, syrup, ham bits, grations, crawfish, and on toast bread just to name a few other ways.
