Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds.
The 1973 version (two films) slaughters, nay massacres, all other versions I have seen.
Its particular qualities:
* Like a a master of paired blades, it both takes its subject very seriously, and very comedically, at the same time, and does both very well in concert with one another, managing not to have one interfere with other.
* It both gives and deserves constant attention to detail.
* Wonderful choreography, particularly of the action scenes, which are both full of slapstick, yet also tend to convey well the chaotic ad hoc unpredictability of combat.
* The reality of the risks are brought home through sudden unexpected defeats and deaths.
* An extremely good cast, well-directed.
* Amazingly good period sets and costumes.
The best film that features the Three Musketeers is The Man In The Iron Mask, with John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
I didn’t know there was more than one.
2011 version: excessive silly crazy Marvel-comic-book/Matrix-style CGI fantasy nonsense
2004 Disney version w. Mickey, Donald, and Goofy – probably closer to the original material than the 2011 version.
2001 version: I have not seen. Looks like it could be well-done, but in a fantastic martial arts style
1998 version: I haven’t seen either. Apparently @filmfann‘s favorite, though looking at a trailer, I’m not expecting it to compete with the 1973 film except in its own dramatic way.
1993 Disney version: At least it’s not the 2011 version, or Disney Star Wars. Very forgettably disappointing compared to the 1973 version unless you’ve got a crush of Kiefer Sutherland or something.
1973 version: The good one.
1948 version – I’ve only seen the trailer – looks like a classic about on par with the 1993 version in an older campy style
