Good stuff to have on the shelf:
Canned tuna.
A couple of boxes of Fiber 1 Protein power bars.
A couple of boxes of salted Matzoh. Just keep them in case of emergency
A few MREs (Meal Ready to Eat) that you pick up at a surplus store for $5.
Spam,
Canned veggies.
Peanut butter, Jelly. That combo goes great on the matzoh.
Canned chunk chicken breast. Goes great with matzoh.
Some leftover Halloween/Christmas/Valentines Day candy.

Also have a few of those ridiculous 3” diameter 9” tall candles that people give as gifts and are never used and end up at Goodwill. That will light up a room for days and give a minuscule amount of heat.

And it would not hurt to have one of these generators and 5 gallons of gasoline.

Bread, nut butters, preserves, anything canned. And after the pandemic, hit up a camping store for a small, gas canister powered, cook stove. I have used mine more during emergencies 8n the last decade than for camping.

ETA probably WalMart and Target would have such things cheaper in their camping departments.

I don’t think the OP is asking about heating or electrical apparatuses. Assume, for a moment, that heat and power are absolutely not an option.

Hot dogs, dried beef or any jerky, tuna, breakfast bars, pbj’s, cold cereals, cookies/chips/snacks, chips and hummus or salsa.
We usually do a little extra baking before storms like hamburgers or brauts, just in case.

Shortbread lasts forever and can sustain you for a long time.
Crackers, bread, jerky, chocolate, fresh fruit as long as it lasts, dried fruit and vegetables, nuts, fruitcake, “bars”...

Bread and cheese, tinned soup, cereal and milk, mixed nuts and chocolate biscuits.

I eat Campbells ham n bean soup right out of the can.

chyna's avatar

Ok, I got bread, cheese, lettuce, tuna, lunch meat, peanut M&M’s (large bag) and wine, which no one mentioned. And potato chips.

Dutchess_III's avatar

But the cheese and lunch meat need to be refrigerated.

That’s what the great outdoors is for this time of year!

I told Rick we were about out of ice last night. He said he’d bought extra and it was on the deck. I laughed.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III That Ricks is funny.
Eating the soup out of the can is doable, like pork n beans.

Dutchess_III's avatar

We didn’t have room in the freezer for a bag of ice.

Pork n beans is what I meant.
