Have you successfully retrieved money from a fraud claim you filed on your debit card?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29260points) February 17th, 2021

Took me 8 months before I finally called Amazon to ask and clarify about a 6 bucks monthly recurring payment which shows up in my bank activity. I assumed it was payment to one of those movie channels Amazon have in their site. It was not.

Amazon informed me they’re not the ones making the charge and I would need to ask my bank to give me the Charge ID for these transactions before they can do anything about it.

My bank doesn’t know what a Charge ID is. They gave me an authorization code instead. I intend to call Amazon and see if this number would help.

What is frustrating is that Amazon was unable to prevent this. Someone piggybacking on their website taking 6 bucks from my account each month. My bank told me these hackers probably have my card number and hoping I won’t notice the monthly pilfered 6 bucks.

But this is what’s depressing, filing a fraud claim will take 10 days and my card had to be blocked which means I can’t use it anywhere. They can send me a replacement but at present I can’t afford to stop using this card, the only one I have.

I am working on albums on Amazon Photos and about to make a big purchase order soon. I told my bank to hold off on blocking the card.

Have you experienced something like this and if you did were you able to get your money back? Thank you.

I did. It took a few days, but I only dealt with my bank. Actually, the bank had called me first, suspecting that the transaction was fraudulent.

^^These thieves are piggybacking on Amazon which makes them invisible to the bank it seems. The bank says it looks like it’s from Canada.

Yeah. I just went in to my credit union and IIRC they gave me a credit either immediately or within a few days.

Yeah. I was checking the statements online and I yelled upstairs to Rick “Where did you say you went yesterday??”
He yelled down “Salina.”
I yelled “Are you SURE you didn’t go to Peurto Rico with out me again??”
The bank instantly credited the charges.

Yes. I got a refund for an overpayment for a utility bill that the company refused to refund.

Someone charged literally several hundred small value items ($5 to $40) from Amazon with my Capital One MasterCard. I reported that to Capital One the same day that it happened. They cancelled my card and sent me another card. Within a couple hours of activating the new credit card well over a hundred more Amazon small purchases were charged on my new Capital One MasterCard. I quickly called Capital One back and told them that I didn’t make these new purchases and cancelled the new Capital One MasterCard. It took me making a couple more phone calls to Capital One to remove all of the charges. I never had to pay for anything. Unbelievably they sent me a 3rd Capital One MasterCard but I never activated it and destroyed it. What’s in your wallet!? HA! Never again.

I had Macy’s charges some years ago for jewelry in stores I never was in and never had to pay them. Recently, on a credit card bill there were three charges totaling $1244.00 on my bill from a shipping company in Louisiana. I called the credit card company right away and they initiated a fraud investigation, canceled the card and sent me a new one. They didn’t make me pay the charges while they investigated.

Side note: it’s worth having a second credit or debit card to use while you’re waiting for the new one to come.

I have my account set to send me a text whenever I use my card or whenever my card is accessed without it being present. The text comes immediately. Often my phone pings while I am still standing at the counter.
One evening it pinged to notify me of a ~$500 purchase at a Head shop in Texas. I called the number on my card immediately. they identified the shop, and the products the perp was buying. No word whether or not they caught the miscreant. My card was cancelled immediately and a new one arrived in ~2 days.

That’s one expensive bong!

It was for dozens of different models and many different supplies. The thief was obviously planning to set up shop somewhere.
