What hypoallergenic laundry soap reduces skin irritation?

Asked by Jeruba (56106points) February 27th, 2021

If you have sensitive skin, what have you found that actually works to reduce itching and other irritation?

And where have you been able to obtain it?

I do not use any fragrances on anything in my home. By fragrances, I mean any fragrance with petrochemicals in it. If it says “fragrance”, that most likely involves petrochemicals. It’s pretty easy to find laundry detergent without fragrances, but it’s difficult to find shampoo or conditioner that’s fragrance free.

Also do not think Febreeze is safe for you just because they say it is safe. There are plenty of people who find it makes them ill or their pets ill. Febreeze works because they use chemicals that act as anesthetic for your nose. There’s nothing healthy for you in it.

All makes a ”“free and clear.” Check the claims on label. *I know nothing about “petrochemicals”. I shall learn.

I use Ecos. It has pretty much the same ingredients as Seventh Generation which is on @tropical Willie’s list of best laundry detergents for sensitive skin. I have very sensitive skin and it works.

@Tropical_Willie Thank you for your reference.
@snowberry Thanks for your informative response to the question.
@snowberry Do you have a list of some other household products which are available without petrochemicals? Thanks.

For me, a lot of what I’m looking for in cleaners is if a chemical might cause me health problems. For example, I don’t seem to have a sensitivity to chlorine, but I do have asthma, and chlorine irritates asthma. Therefore, even though I might find a chlorine based toilet bowl cleaner without fragrances, I will probably choose one without chlorine.

Bottom line, it pays to read the ingredient list. See, some of the shampoo and soap people have kind of twisted thinking. Sometimes they’ll say it’s fragrance free, and what they did was put “anesthetic for the nose chemicals” in it to minimize any smell. I have learned to stay away from any company that even sells such products. I don’t trust them.

So what chemicals do they use as anesthetic? There’s apparently a long list. But in my thinking, if I can’t pronounce it, or if there’s NO ingredient list at all, I don’t buy it. https://royfmc.com/2018/10/04/the-dangers-of-febreze-does-the-extensive-usage-of-the-synthetic-air-freshner-pose-a-significant-health-risk/

What I want is a product that smells like the ingredients, and I don’t want any smelly stuff (even essential oils). Last month I went to Fresh Thyme to find a mild smelling and fragrance free shampoo. I grabbed the gal who works in health and vitamins, and we spent about 40 minutes searching through all their products. She was dismayed to find that their house brand of “healthy” shampoo has fragrance in it!

I have found and tried a number of excellent frangrance free shampoos, but unfortunately I am still sensitive to one or more of the ingredients. Nevertheless, they might work for you. So far I have tried Burts Bees shampoo and Alaffia unscented shampoo. Both of them made me itch before my hair dried, which made me very sad. They’re good products; they’re just not for me.

My Fresh Thyme lady finally found Derma-E Scalp Relief Shampoo. It works great.

My husband found this product that does pretty much what Febreeze does, only without the toxic ingredients. It really does work and It’s made of essential oils. https://www.freshwaveworks.com/products/all-products-c13
