I’ve upgraded to 2.1 on my laptop (it contains no music) and have plugged it into my main desktop with Windows XP. It makes the “buh-dum” noise that says a device is connected, but the iPod does not show up in My Computer or iTunes. I do have iTunes 8 and I’ve restarted.

what does the ipod say ? the connected symbol ? let’s try something here, reset it (holding the centre and menu button) and when it resets put it in disk mode as soon as it begins to power on (that’s centre and play/pause, keep them pushed) and then connect it, what happend ?
Thanks for the troubleshooting, Cam.
Before I read what you said, i had already begun to reinstall the firmware. I guess it worked. And I should have been more specific, I have an iPo d T ouch.
Something happened, and all that matters is that it works.
@Eambos: iPoT, eh? I thought I smelled something ;)
So it works now? I download itunes 8 but I like itunes 7 more
Having the same problem with iPhone 3g and vista. The driver for the iphone won’t install properlly. I keep getting an error message when I try along the lines of the driver is not designed for this platform. The phone doesn’t seem to be charging either.
Have tried restting iphone. Using different USB cable. Using a different port. Reinstalling itunes. Uninstalling every apple app and then reninstalling itunes.Going into device manager and trying to force windows to update the driver. Amusingly windows will only recognise that the phone is connected when there’s an image on the screen. When it goes to sleep it disappears from the device manager.
It’s very upsetting.
awww you got me excited from the title, iPoT, i wants!!! but no… its just an iPood question :(
GA to uberbatman for trying to make me wet myself. iPood? I’m literally wheezing from laughing. I can’t believe I’ve never heard that before.
