Would a portable device that gives chest compressions work?
Has it been invented yet?

Many ambulances have them in my area. ^^^^
Yes, I worked on the design for an automated CPR device . It was a combination of ventilator, chest compression band and monitoring sensors.
It would have to be quite heavier than the person getting the compressions. And it might get the nick-name “The Puckinator.”
We’ve been using Zoll Autopulse devices for about 10 years now. Not only do they work they are so effective that it is not unheard of for patients to regain consciousness while the device is giving compressions.
That can result in some interesting conversations.
