Can you do the shuffle dance?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43867points) March 14th, 2021

If you are not familiar, this is the shuffle dance.
And here is a video that says you can learn how to do it in 5 minutes.
Note how each foot hits all 3 positions: front, middle, and rear.
I have been trying for 2 weeks and can only manage 5–10 seconds before losing my place. I am winded after 20–30 seconds.
Some of them look like they are floating. Are they doing this on the Moon?!
This shuffle stair challenge blows me away. I’d be found dead on the basement floor with 2 broken ankles and a head injury if I tried it.
If you can do it, what is your secret?

No. And I would have a heart attack if I tried that!

For a while I had two cats and two dogs and a young child. That’s kind of how I got around without stepping on anyone.

And I must say, @LuckyGuy, my amusement knows no bounds that it is you that asked this question. :-D

We are old Father Williams and our hair has grown gray…...

I have been working at it a few times per day. I WILL be able to do it.
Not the stair-step thing. That is crazy.

Videos or we won’t believe it!

Agreed. Maybe I’ll do some tiktoks.

Not on my best day.

Good God man. Have you lost your mind?

This is what grand kids will do to you.

I’m not overweight. I’m in reasonable shape. It doesn’t look that complicated.
I figure I should be able to do a simple shuffle with some practice. But I just can’t get the many weight transfers that are going on.

I’m not trying to be this guy.. It’s worth watching this talented kid practicing in his basement. i just want to be able to do a simple basic step for about 30 seconds or so.
I’ll keep working at it.

My step-dad’s been trying to get me into dancing! (I just stand there like a statue). What am I even supposed to do? Dancing- (Me trying to think of something) Step-dad: “Just do the shuffle.” (Me having no clue how to do that) sad violin plays
I dislike dancing. Music? Give me a song I can sing.

I’ve watced this guy’s videos. He’s not flashy. He is trying to make it easy. Look at this one Learn to shuffle by walking. It helps get the timing and basic motions.

@idktimmyturner If you can do some basic steps you will not be afraid or embarrassed on a dance floor when you go to weddings or other parties. side – together – side – together works for 90% of the songs you’ll hear. Practice to this one. Thinkin’ out loud

@LuckyGuy I can try- It is so embarrassing though. I’m just bored it’s 5 a.m in TN

We’re in the same timezone. I got up early so I could get things ready to make sushi for breakfast. While waiting I was practicing shuffle/running man.

I know it is embarrassing if you do it in public. Practice privately until you get a little smoother. Then go out there. That is how everyone does it. Not one of those people in the videos looked like that when they started.
If you saw me attempting to do it this morning you would not be embarrassed. Here is a video of the same guy showing how he progressed over a year. Note the sweat on his shirt. He is working hard.

@LuckyGuy private message if you can? I’m kind of bored and also, sushi for breakfast? I should live with you lol.

@LuckyGuy I just tried this stair shuffle.. I didn’t know I could do it? Man- that wasn’t even half bad.

LostInParadise's avatar

I tried it. The biggest problem I have is that my calf muscles get tired.

LuckyGuy's avatar

I keep getting lost . After about 6 to 12 reps I lose it. I guess I just need to practice.

@idktimmyturner What?!?! You did the stairs – and lived. Now you’ve goth something to demo on the dance floor!

And ,Yes, I am experimenting with different kinds of sushi and preparations. This morning I made it with white rice that I cooked with vegetable flakes. It held together nicely.
Last week I made a couple of rolls with brown rice, smoked salmon and cream cheese – reminiscent of bagels lox and cream-cheese.. I warmed it in the microwave for about 10 seconds to get a nice warm center.

In my youth I’ve danced many a shuffle, polka and prod.

LuckyGuy's avatar

OK…, I’ve been practicing and can do it with a bit of a smile pasted on my face and I no longer need to hold my breath. I can actually breathe and shuffle at the same time.
Now I need to do something with my arms and stop looking at my feet.

@idktimmyturner When you come down from the one leg up position do you have most of your weight on the front leg? Or, do you split it evenly between front and back legs? I try to split the weight but end up putting everything on the front. I can’t tell what is correct.

And watching this does not help…. Skip the first 30 seconds of BS. I like how she says, “Have fun with it.” If I were having fun with it I wouldn’t need to be watching how to do it!

idktimmyturner's avatar

@LuckyGuy That is something I would’ve asked myself. I never know, but I think I put most of the weight on the front leg? I’m not completely sure, to be honest.

@LuckyGuy Glad, you sent me this question. As you may know, I do shuffle dance and LOVE it! Very good exercise and so darn fun. “I’d be found dead on the basement floor with 2 broken ankles and a head injury if I tried it” lol, I like your description. I can’t tell you how to do it but I just do. Maybe a combination of skill, coordination and rhythm?
