Does anyone really win prizes offered by retail sites?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33577points) March 18th, 2021

I buy a fair amount over the internet.

Twice in the last week, I’ve received emails from the vendor – “Rank us and leave us your opinion and we’ll put your name in for a drawing for $500” or something like that.

These are reputable companies that I have a history with and buy from regularly.

My question:

Does anyone really win this come-on drawings? Or is it one person every 10 years? Is it really worth my time?

Three times this past year.

One was newspaper ! How they knew the size of slippers my wife wears (fur lined and she loves them)

Yes. To offer a prize and not deliver, constitutes fraud.

Typically, these are real in some sense. The fine print will give the game away though. You’re sure to have a very small chance of winning and the information you provide them will probably be much more valuable than your expected return.

Side note: remember when you didn’t have to fork over your personal ID to win a free coke under the bottle cap?
