What retirement housing resources have you used successfully?

Asked by Jeruba (56061points) March 25th, 2021

Have you had to find a retirement or assisted living community for a loved one or for yourself?

If so, how did you go about it and how did you proceed? How did you assemble your options and weigh them? How did you avoid pitfalls and unworkable situations?

Did you find a reliable guide?

How did you establish whom you could trust?

My Dad lived with us the last three years of his life, from age 97 to 100. He did not want to go to a retirement home. We kept him at home as long as possible. However, when he became so weak in his legs that he could no longer walk to the toilet, we finally had no choice.

By then he was under hospice care. So all we had to do was select one of the nursing homes that would accept hospice patients. The one we selected was highly recommended by many of our friends; one of our friends had worked as a dietitian at that facility, and was very complementary.

Yes. I looked at everything within 25 miles of me. The choice was so so easy. There was one assisted living not owned by a corporation, but by a family…for the past 26 years. The big glorious beautiful corporate institutions could not compete with the one-story frame building with rockers on the front porch in the shade of moss-draped oaks. Mom’s new home.

@SnipSnip Before settling on the home we finally picked for Bawji (our name for Dad), we looked at many private converted homes. We were always concerned about 24/7 coverage.

@crazyguy We did not even consider a converted private home. We chose a small town family-run facility that has all of the safety features but feels like a big house with many (32 private efficienies with private baths) bedrooms. There are converted homes in the area but I just wasn’t impressed with any of them. There are always what seems like more than enough staff there. Most importantly, they spend individual time with the residents helping with whatever they need. No tier 1, tier 2, etc. services. There is a huge courtyard outside with a screened area.
