Why was rescue breathing removed from the first aid training?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24947points) March 30th, 2021

Is it because people where afraid of cooties? Or that the students where uncomfortable with it?

I am relieved that I don’t have to do rescue breathing, as I am uncomfortable with the manoeuvre.

Are you referring to CPR or the Heimlich or something specific? I’m not familiar with the term ‘rescue breathing’.

We were trained in school in health class as required teaching in high school, then refresher courses are offered free by the American Red Cross.

@KNOWITALL CPR. I was uncomfortable with breathing into the dummy. I didn’t want a virus or bacterial infection.

@RedDeerGuy1 We had little one-use plastic covers on ours, so it wasn’t an issue.

I haven’t had to use CPR, thank goodness, but the heimlich many times.

Chest compression and AED are first line today. What is AED? info from Red Cross.

Germs.

People were reluctant anyway.

They found compressions work just as well.

Not because of germs.
Studies have shown that the important part of CPR is proper chest compressions, not the rescue breathing.
