Is Biden restarting the wall construction between the US and Mexico?

Asked by KNOWITALL (29896points) April 6th, 2021

It appears some construction is proceeding and I’m curious what you think of that since so many were saying it was pointless when the previous President was in office.
————————————-
Late last month, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador blamed the new president for the crisis, arguing that the “expectations” he set left migrants with the perception that they would be let into the US.

If it’s a wall that’s been there before trump and being repaired or reinforced I think it’s a nothing burger.

Obrador probably should just shut up and instead work on improving the economy and security in his country and also work with other Presidents in that region so their people wouldn’t have to run for their lives seeking refuge from another country.

I just saw the Jen Psaki Press Conference in which she was asked this question. Apparently some of the construction that was in process is being continued but most of the sections are under a pause while funding and other issues such as enviromental impact are being reviewed.

@janbb I hope that is the case. After further reading, it sounds like some of this was funded under 45 so they’re continuing those projects.

Can’t those contracts be renegotiated so that the work is done to dismantle the wall?

@hello321 That’s honestly what I was expecting, this threw me for a loop when I read it on the news.

I hope the building has stopped since Trump took money from the Armed Forces earmarked family housing repair and construction.

That wall was the biggest waste of time and tax dollars on this planet.

@Dutchess_III “That wall was the biggest waste of time and tax dollars on this planet.”

That really depends on what you think the purpose was. If it was to keep out undocumented, then I completely agree. If the purpose was a symbolic structure to galvanize support of disgruntled working class Americans who’ve had their jobs outsourced by decades of anti-worker policies and chronic neglect from both parties by directing their anger to immigrants while maintaining/expanding/turning attention away from the Reagan economic model that was the real cause of their economic woes—then it was a big success.

There is materials and manpower already paid for which can’t be returned or refunded, but there stuff sits, unused. There is cheap, useless fencing Obama had put up which is being repaired some locations, but I’m not sure if it’s being done by states, or frantic property owners.

Anyone who says Trump’s immigration measures didn’t help can go to hell. It made a huge difference.

Here are some folks who know.

I just don’t find anything about construction resuming on the wall.

@Patty_Melt Thanks for making my point for me.

Well, Lopez Obrador isn’t entirely wrong. I don’t think Biden deliberately sent a message that more migrants would be accepted but migrants certainly had that impression (that Biden assuming the presidency means their chances of getting into the country increase). Otherwise they wouldn’t be wearing Biden T-shirts, for crying out loud. It isn’t that the wall or even Trump’s immigration measures were so successful, it’s that Trump’s messaging that he would be tough on immigration and seal the border succeeded in deterring immigrants (at least for a while. From what I understand, numbers were high in 2019 as well long before the election).
