What are some examples?
No.
The “ice bucket” challenge comes to mind @jca2.
@Dutchess_III: I know that one and the Tide Pod challenge, also the Cinnamon challenge. The OP mentioned “overnight or 24 hour” challenges which I haven’t heard of.
I used to do the 24-Hour Short Story competition: write a short story using a given prompt, with a word limit, between noon on Saturday and noon on Sunday. There’s a new contest once per season. I won an honorable mention a time or two.
It’s sort of like a NaNoWriMo in miniature, but without the group sessions and cheerleaders.
If you like to write fiction but you tend toward verbosity, fuss over things for too long, or sit there with terrific words in your head and nowhere to go with them, the enforced discipline of this contest is great exercise. You might also find that a story dashed out in 24 hours can evolve into something much longer, more solid, and more polished. One woman I know turned a contest entry of hers into a novel.
Never done any but have helped in creating and promoting a few challenges. Usually, the dumb challenges are self evolved. You know, dumb ones like kiki, where dunces jump out of a moving car, dance and then jump back in….or the ‘Would you dare’ challenge, where little kids dare each other to do something that is outrageous and never expected? Those come from platforms like tiktok..
Some challenges are created by teams, as part of online promotional activities. Usually, these challenges are not dumb….maybe a little silly but not dumb. A sing along challenge, where people are encouraged to sing (or lip sync) a song….or a dance challenge, where people are asked to choreograph and perform their own moves on selected songs….these type of challenges serve a purpose. They help in promoting an event or a song launch or a new artist or a movie….they are all carefully created and well promoted by a team of professionals. They are fun for kids to participate in, helpful for people like us, who are online marketing consultants. I’ve helped create a few of my own…..

“Can you name a word that starts with C and ends with D? Only a person with an IQ of at least 180 can do it.”
You guys are joking, right?
@Dutchess_III, I could if I were being candid, but instead I called in confused and just capitulated.
@Zaku, I see it. Took a few seconds.
Right @Jeruba? And then people answer like they believe that sh**.
@Jeruba Yes. There are so many of those that are insultingly dumb click/share-bait.
I thought this question title was funny, because the Internet is full of crazy numbers of challenges of so many different types. OP apparently meant the “I dare you to immerse in ice water and share a video of it” fads, but the wording didn’t specifically say that. And as for that type, NO, I am not about to do some stupid dare fad unless it sounds like actual fun, and so far, they’ve sounded awful to me.
@Dutchess_III, @Zaku, I guess I’m just out of step. I don’t do much roaming on the Internet and was not particularly aware of those challenges. How silly.
I try not to click on anything that could fit the term “click bait,” and I guess maybe I’ve managed to steer clear of some of the really dumb stuff. It must be warping brains on all sides.
@Jeruba It seems like it warps a few, at least from my perspective. I mostly only see them as messages™ my friends™ have shared™ on Facebook™, but I’m surprised to see that some of the people sharing™ them are people I otherwise considered reasonable and/or tasteful people, whom I would’ve expected to share (not tm) my disdain for them.
