Iceland on Friday suspended the Moderna anti-Covid vaccine, citing the slight increased risks of cardiac inflammation, going further than its Nordic neighbours which simply limited use of the jabs.
Since Thursday, Sweden and Finland have also suspended the use of the Moderna vaccine but only for those under 30, because of a risk of inflammation of the myocardium, the heart muscle, and the pericardium, the membrane covering the heart.
Denmark and Norway have formally advised against it for those under 18.
@omtatsat Moderna was never approved for people under 18 in the US.
That’s not new news about the myocarditis, did they have new data, like a recent cluster of cases of the side effect? It’s very rare, it happens more in young men.
Myocarditis is a much bigger risk of the actual covid disease itself than of the shot.
The US director of CDC also recently mentioned the risk from the vaccine in interviews regarding the third shot and the risks and benefits.
Pausing doesn’t mean they won’t eventually continue administering it. They are reviewing the data. Maybe those countries will permanently change the age recommendation, or look to changing the dosage. Moderna has had trials with half the dose, I’m not sure where that went.
