Why do people accept some government restrictions, and totally refuse to accept others?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23425points) April 28th, 2021

Most people have no issue when the government installs cumbersome travel restrictions due to terrorist actions. We shrug and say “Oh well, it’s for the safety of all.” Now that the government installs cumbersome restrictions due to a pandemic, which is killing more people than terrorists can dream about, those same people get all upset. They say “You’re taking away all my freedom, we won’t stand for it.” Why such a fuss over one and not the other?

Excellent question, but I have no answer. I do think that (here I go getting political again) it may be due, in part at least, to the far right mentality. We have to impose draconian restrictions on travel, re: terrorists because them thar brown Moosllims want to take our freedom. But we can’t impose any restrictions at all, because of some gol dang leftie Covid hoax, what’s all hoax to steal our freedom. (And we’re too damn stupid to see the disconnect here).

Yes, I got mine and I do encourage others to, but I also think there are some valid points to the anti-vaxx argument. In the end, you cannot force someone to inject an unknown substance into their bodies without their consent. Their body, their choice. Far different than terrorism.

No FDA approval, multiples pulled after issues.
You can still get Covid.
You can still spread Covid.
It has no real effect on any variants.
We all will need another shot to update later in the year.
The CDC says around 6k people have died of Covid after being fully vaccinated.
Hospitals are not requiring staff to get the vaccines, here.

The only legitimate argument I use is that it reduces your chances of dying of Covid or ending up in the hospital from Covid. No one believes it protects anyone else, as that has not been proven to be the case.

@SQUEEKY2: “Now the Government installs cumbersome restrictions due to a pandemic…”

What restrictions are you referring to?

- the threat does not have a face. There is no turban wearing, brown skinned, strange-language speaking, foreign religion believing personification that can be rallied against as “the enemy”.
– the threat is not visceral. The virus does not fly planes into buildings, detonate bombs, or blow itself up, shouting “allahu akbar”, resulting in blood, guts and gore being strewn about a densely packed mall or public square. (Ask yourself if the general perception would change, if instead of just showing the number of people killed by the virus, they just threw the bodies onto a huge corpse pile, and showed daily pictures and videos of it on the news)
– it is not another group of beings, that can be painted as opposing ideology, and thus can not be used to appeal to human tribalism to unite people behind a cause.
– it can not be solved with simple violence. You can not just simply send in the military to defeat covid with guns, bombs, and missiles

All that makes the threat more abstract, and makes it seem ‘less real’ and ‘less dangerous’.
Half the population either denies that the problem is real, or thinks that the problem is “not that bad”.
And if you think that the problem is not really a problem, why should your life be inconvenienced by restrictions?
Furthermore, the restrictions placed on people due to the “war on terror” was much less overt, much less immediate.
NSA surveillance of the entire populace? You did not even know about until Snowden.
Intrusive TSA searches and limits on luggage during air travel? Eh, how often do you fly, anyway?
Secret torture camps, extrajudicial killings, and the Guantanamo concentration camp? It is not you getting bombed, tortured, or imprisoned without trial, so why care about that?
Your daily life was not impacted much, if at all.
Now you are being told to wear masks when going shopping, asked to keep a distance in public, asked to limit contact with people, asked to forego visits to the cinema, hairdresser, restaurants, or the spa.
It is not much to ask of people in general (the people running those businesses is another story, of course), but it is a restriction that is immediate, it is daily, and it is prolongued.
And again, when propagandists tell you that Covid is “not even as bad as the flu”, why put up with it?
You can see a similar, if not identical mindset when it comes to global warming or environmental destruction and pollution.

Some people are spoiled rotten, stupid and have no critical thinking skills.

Your question is absolutely authentic. Millions of people are being affected by this pandemic, and thousands of them are facing death while the safe people are blaming the government for imposing rules that are not favorable to them. But I assure that when these people face the situation mentioned above, only then will they get to know the importance of these strict laws set by the government. The people who seek their freedom now absolutely do not know the value of life.

Thank you for your question, Have a good day ahead.
