Can one defer ones wages for a year or more?

While working for a start up business to become profitable?

Or do I need to own part of the company?

That would depend entirely on the employment agreement. It’s not a normal business practice.

Maybe a contractor would draw up an agreement to house and feed the employee and pay lump sum later..a bit risky if employer not honest.
