“To suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.” To learn by experience. To do what is needed to be respected by one’s peers.
It’s a matter of doing the hard work necessary to understand the fundamentals of a job, profession, or craft.
One usually doesn’t know if one has paid one’s dues until passed over for promotion or recognition, and realizing one is slighted.
